When my dog was yawning right in my face a few days ago  , I saw a little black spot on her tooth that looks like a cavity. She has never really liked chewing on anything (even as a puppy) so I have always been worried about her teeth.

I've been feeding her homeprepared food (cooked) since January because of her food allergies, so all of her food is relatively soft. I've tried giving her raw bones but she won't touch them. The only thing I can get her to chew on are bully sticks. I brush her teeth weekly, but brushing doesn't seem to make a big difference.

I made an appointment for her to have a checkup with her vet on the 15th of this month, but she said that they do not fill cavities. She's eating, drinking, playing and acting completely normal.

Has anyone else had any experience with cavities? Could it be something else? I really don't want her to have to have her tooth pulled :(

I've never known a dog with cavities.... the vet check isn't a bad idea with the soft diet.

It's not necessarily a cavity but may just be a spot of tartar that can be removed. :)

If she doesn't like bones, have you tried big pieces of carrots, apples, sweet potatoes etc.?

You can also try the homeopathic remedy fragaria vesca (3C potency) or using a digestive enzyme powder like Prozyme to brush the teeth.

So cavities aren't that common in dogs? I was wondering why I couldn't find any other posts about them

Hopefully it is just a tartar spot, but it looked a lot like a cavity.

I'll try giving her apples and carrots to chew on. She does love those, but they're part of her veggie mush I give her every day.

Thanks for the replies :)

Update: The vet said that it is most likely a tartar deposit, as it is in a very common place for those to develop and the rest of her teeth and gums look very healthy. Of course he could only look at the spot for a fraction of a second because Saluda wasn't being very cooperative.

He recommended getting her teeth cleaned sometime in the furture, just to be 100% sure that it's not a cavity and because she's starting to get a little build up on her back teeth.

Aside from that, he said she's perfectly healthy and he couldn't stop commenting on how shiney and soft her coat is now :D

Bone time !!
I have offered her raw bones in the past, and she just ignores them. :( Do you know of any tricks to make her want to chew them? She has really never enjoyed chewing on anything hard.

I would really love for her to start chewing bones though, so I won't have to worry so much about her teeth :)
