The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the one I figured the OP was asking about. The C Bulldog is a cross using the Leopard Dog. There's an entry on the Bulldog on the molosser site as well, as well as the Catahoula Bull Terrier and another one that I don't recall now. But they are all modern crosses using the Leopard Dog.

Catahoula Leopard

Just curious the responses I would get.
the thread about the 15 dogs and what you think,(Dog breeds and first thought), lots of people said hound for the catahoula. My "old" vet was sure he was a great dane, i told him no he's a catahoula and he still persisted he had great dane in him????
I his saw his mom and dad, I'm pretty sure he's pure catahoula leopard.
We got a new vet since then.

not sure how to insert pics or I'd post one of him.
In my avaitar he was 6 weeks old.

Catahoulas are not actually hounds -- they are curs. :) There are alot of differences between curs and hounds. Catahoulas are silent on track whereas scenthounds are not. They use both their sense of smell and sight (though mainly sight), and they are hot-nosed (will only track new scents). They are also good guard dogs (most hounds are not) and they are versatile in MANY other ways, whereas hounds in general do not excell in alot of activities.

I was supposed to get a catahoula pup this month, but unfortunatly the litter fell ill. So I've decided to keep one of Visa's puppies instead. One day I'd love to get a houla though.

Catahoula Leopard vs Border Collie

We had a border collie (scruffy) for 13 years before getting this catahoula (blue) (a gift to my daughter) registered thru NALC also. anyways he's a fine dog. Its just his elevator dont make it near as high as Scruffy's did. The man we got him from claims up and down that his catahoulas are "Smart Dogs". well uh?
Dont get me wrong I love blue, we had him for almost a year now and pretty much got the wrinkles ironed out, but he's not near as inteligent as scruffy.
Scruffy just knew things (kinda like common sense) that Blue just dont have.:D

Read about the Catahoula, and that its not of the hound family but the mastiff and redwolf.

Molosser is Spanish for Mastiff.:)
"Molosser" means a bit more than 'mastiff.' It refers to a wide array of breeds that carry the ancient molosser genes; everything from the Mastiff to the tiny Pug :)

Molosser

Ancient Epirus was known for its wardogs and guardian dogs, descendants of ancient mastiffs. The dogs were named Molossers after a country in Epirus, Molossia. "Molosser" now refers to the breeds that descended from the ancient mastiff. While the varied breeds still share some physical characteristics, all retain the courageous and protective nature of their ancestors.
I'm not sure where Molossia was (it may well have been an Iberian country) . . . hmmm . . . have to go look that up . . . Time to go learn something new! :D
