Interesting to say the least.

Did you all see the second comment left though? That's sad. :(

This is against God. The thing should be put down, it is horrific.
That's horrible! I'm sorry, but unless the cat is actually obviously suffering, then why should this be considered.
I'm not against Christians, but when some of them bring out stuff about how it is not what God wants etc it annoys me so much.

I agree . . . especially since that is a natural (and not manmade) mutation. If you HAVE to bring religion into the issue, that still doesn't make it against God. Either its an accident of God's Creation . . .or its God's work. Perhaps God would like us to know more about development . . . perhaps he just wasn't awake when he was proofreading that kitten's genome . . . maybe he has some ineffiable reason of His own . . .

What would be this person's logic be? Since human's didn't have anything to do with it (except perhaps its survival) . . and this is the kind of person who doesn't believe in natural accidents . . . what, the devil made the kitten? Give me a break.

Or it is an anomoly of nature and has nothing to do with a "god" figure.

Well, yes. I did say if you HAVE to bring God into it. My personal opinion is that its just a chance mutation. That's how the world works, God or no God. Such things happen.

However, I enjoy nothing more than pointing out when someone's own logic makes no sense, even by their rules. Saying that kitten is against God makes no sense, even from a religious standpoint . . . thus making a truely idiotic statement.

I have to agree that even from a religious standpoint that person's comment was uncalled for. The kitten may be mutated... but is he suffering??? Not at this point... according to the article he/she seems to be doing really well. I read the article yesterday so can't remember if they said it was a he or a she. Anyways... I have to say that I'm really glad that this lady decided to take a chance on this kitten. What a lucky little kitty.

Especially from a religious standpoint it is uncalled! Aren't you supposed to love all creatures? Show me the passage where it says that a kitten born with two faces is the devil!

Poor kitten... but it seems to have a great life, it is loved. It made me smirk how one side can go to sleep while the other one is awake! Now that is something I could utilize myself! :)

I think that that cat had a parasitical twin that attached to it, it happens in humans (twins) sometime too. (you can google it)

Actually, that's not what's wrong with it I think. I read a popular science book, I think it's called 'Mutants', that discusses such developmental deformities. Right at this moment, I can't remember which gene causes it, but its not actually twinning . . . its a gene that forms the face going bonkers. I'll try to find the book when I get home from work.

Edit: Actually, here are some links about the disorder

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diprosopus

This one explains the difference from parasitic twins: http://www.phreeque.com/parasitic_twins.html

According to a medical site, no human with the disorder has ever survived past birth. Just a pig and a cat.

Thanks Lilavati! Learn something new everyday:D.

So is it still two twins that joined at an early age? Or is it a mutation?
Diprosopus, also known as craniofacial duplication, is an extremely rare form of conjoined twins whereby there is a near complete fusion of bodies but part or all of the face is duplicated on the head.

Of course, I could see either happening, but what the book said . . . and the second link as well, is that its because gene "sonic hedgehog" (yes, it is real and it is called that, its a major developmental gene) is over expressed in the head. Underexpressed gets cyclopia, which is pretty much always fatal as well. The mutation hasn't been found yet, but it would be in the regulatory genes that tell sonic when and where to turn on and off.

I'm not a scientist, but that explanation actually makes more sense to me than the parasitic twin/conjoined twin explanation . . . its too perfect to be a parasitic twin, and so total (and often enough replicated almost identically, though the creature rarely lives) that it seems a little weird for it to be conjoined twins . . .while having it been the reverse of cyclopia seems very logical to me. (And yes, I am an irredeemable nerd who reads very strange books)

They've bred mice without sonic all together . . . the results are gruesome and never survive even into late pregnancy.
