We have an eight year old cat that got a puppy invading his house about three months ago. The cat is a very shy cat. At first he was going into hiding and slowly he has gotten more bold. Yesterday our cat started chasing the dog(who is now five months old) away from him. We have been there the whole time when they are together and got the puppy to stop barking and trying to run at the cat but now he wants to play with our cat. Our cat does not agree with this plan. I figure this is better with the cat scaring the dog rather than the other way around. Am I right?

Is the puppy a lot bigger than the cat? If the puppy's playing includes chewing on the cat, then yeah, works for me if the cat makes the puppy back off. We've had cats who initially chased the dogs and eventually wound up playing with them (chasing each other around the house). Actually we had one cat who was too rough with the dog (an English Cocker); he'd wait for the dog to go zooming by and would grab her around the neck, knocking her to the ground. Looked like a cowboy bulldogging a steer. She stopped playing with the cat after a few of those...

The puppy is now probably more than three times the cat's size. The puppy hasn't done any chewing. He just gives the cat play bows. The cat growls and chases before puppy can get close enough. Yesterday the puppy was laying with me and the cat came up and sniffed the puppies feet. I would swear the puppy started holding his breath! Once the cat got out of sight puppy was up and all excited; but while the cat was in sight he did not move!

Well, hopefully, once the cat establishes his boundaries for the puppy, they will wind up being friends. My mother's Rottie became best friends with one of her cats and they'd wrestle all the time (the Rottie was very gentle and the cat had no problems pouncing on her then ducking under a chair). Hope your pair work out their relationship!

Thanks Snark! Our cat actually let the puppy get really close today and just meowed at him; but then decided to hiss.
