Ok im not here to gross anyone out.......but my puppy Ace will not stay out of the cat's litter box! I can not even begin to fathom why the dog would think this tastes good, but he is obsessed with it. Scolding has not helped. I know the sensible thing would be to move the litter box, which I dont wanna do cause it would have to be moved to a carpeted area. But I figured maybe just maybe somebody had a way I could break him of this.

P.S.- I posted in this forum cause I figured yall who read this may have a cat/dog combo like myself.

A lot of dogs do this, it's food and no matter how much you scold a dog for eating food he's still gonna do it.

So that leaves a few options.

1. move the litter box up high where the dog can't get it

2. get one of those covers for the litter box (some dogs might still be able to get to it)

3. if you have a larger dog you could install a kitty dog that allows the kitty in but not the dog and put it on the door to the room where the litter box is.

Covers don't work well.. even large dogs can get in. I'd do a babygate in the room the box is in or a small kitty-door.

dogs like cat poop because most cat food is strogly odored in order to entice animals that can be finiky in nature. this is often reflected in the poop which still smells strongly of the enticing stuff...

our cocker loves a good litterbox buffet so we fixed the problem by making a large box just 4 sides and a removable top that was just big enough to fit a large litterbox inside and high enough for kitty to get in and stand up comfortably with head room.
we made the top removable as a lift off, in half the lid we cut out a circular opening on each end, on one end we put the screen form an old screen door (so it would let light in and air circulate) and the other one was left open so the cat can get in. the box is deep enough and the hole just big enough for the cat and the angle makes it difficult for the dog to get his head in. but the cat can get in easily...he also likes it because he can hang out sitting on top of it. and the chihuahuas cant get to him. ive seen some online that are professionally made but can be very expensive...especially if your handy with a saw and drill you can make one yourself easily.

This is not uncommon. But the burden is on you to make sure that litter box isn't accessible to your dog. When tosca was a puppy she would like nothing more than a nice litter box snack. I relocated the box behind a small trap door that the cats could get in and out of but Tosca couldn't. Now that she's an adult she doesn't have the cat turd snack habit. There is another reason why it's important to keep that box away from your puppy. Most scoopable litters contain a clumping agent that can wreak all kinds of digestive havoc. Some of those clumping litters clump inside the stomach too, you see.
Some folks think that plenty of the digestive issues cats get might trace back to that. That is why I use Cat's Pride, because it doesn't use sodium bentonite as a clumping agent, so at least if my cats or dog ingest some there isn't going to be any of those dangers that are rumored about that clumping agent. It also doesn't clump as hard as other litters so it's not quite as convenient, but I think it's worth the trade-off. Anyways, it's a really good idea to keep that box away from that puppy and don't leave it to him to "obey".

our old dog use to do that. He was 10 when we got him so we just let him do it, it was litter I didn't have to scoop and clean. We used this corn husk litter so it wasn't detrimental to his health. Still gross and his breath was really bad but oh well he liked it.

Well there is one thing I think is equally horrific and that's when you dog watches the cat barf and then eats it in a snap while it's still warm.

...shiver...
