Two reasons. One - names have power and nobody, human or animal, should be named frivolously, as a joke. The act of naming has a sacred aspect to it, and dubbing a dog Peanut when it can look you in the eye without standing on its hind legs, is an attempt to make a mockery of the dog in a language he/she can't understand. Two - I've noticed that people whose dogs have 'jokey' names tend to also be people who allow very obnoxious behavior from their dogs in public. I think the names are part of a larger problem of people not taking their dogs seriously as adult animals, behaving instead as if they were just cuddly child-substitutes, and expecting everyone else to tolerate them endlessly.
I thought I'd start a new thread as requested by others in the other thread I got this quote from that you said..

What do you think of Riots name then if you believe in the above? lol

Just curious :)

I think Riot is a happy name :) As far as Casablanca1, that theory is hilarious. Okay, that person says that naming a dog Peanut is an attempt to make a mockery of the dog in a language he/she can't understand?! :p Ummm...hello, dogs sniff each other's butts constantly, and they are worried about insulting the dog with a name?! I've never seen a dog need couseling because of the name their owner gave them. Also, Casablanca assumes that anyone naming their dog "peanut" is doing so as a joke. That is so not true. I had a dog named peanut because he loved peanuts. Hmm..nope. Never had to take him to couseling either. Some people...

He's much better :) My husband got some ant killer and killed them all, but now we have to watch out for the insecticide! He's so cute though. If he sees an ant bed in front of him, he will walk ALL the way around. He won't get within 10 feet of one :p Oh well, at least he learned his lesson!

It's a little unpleasant to start a thread, head it with my name, make the thread about a theory from another thread, dismiss it as silly and then chat about personal matters more appropriate for PM. Disagree, fine, but the two of you are just being rude.

It's also rude to hijack a thread and ramble aimlessly all the while being rude. But, I didn't complain (well, until NOW that is :D ). And, um, they only did what you did on the other thread. Anyways.

Seriously, if you have so much wisdom on the topic of dog names why don't you enlighten us, Summer asked you a question and I believe it to be a honest question.

Enlighten away....

Jess: Buddy did a thread about wanting to acquire a Great Dane, I responded to his question and commented on the dog's name. Several people took offense. I responded to their complaints, several other people took me to task for Thread Hijacking, and Summer started this thread, ostensibly to resurrect the question of names. I pointed out that it's unpleasant to use someone's screen name to head a thread when your intention appears to be to ridicule them, Buddy came onto this thread to re-express his feelings about the earlier Thread Hijacking Debacle for reasons best known to him/herself, and now you're up to date.

Why does it matter what someone names their dog....You could name a Great Dane "Tiny" or a Chi "Butch" but that is no reflection on the owners ability to care for their animal....

Actually, you may want to stop thinking you know it all. :) I do not believe Summer had any intention of doing anything except for asking a question. She wanted your opinion. It just so happens that cowgurl wanted to express her opinion also and she did-she got here first.

I, on the other hand, would also like to hear more about what you think about dog's names and why... but maybe this time you can do so without offending people? If not, then leave the thread alone. It's as simple as that.

Just a thought... ;)

Ive looked at the thread and cannot see where casablanca1 has assumed that 'anyone' calling a dog peanut is doing it as a joke, merely people with large dogs.

Whilst many people do not agree with the theory some of it, IMO seems correct. Do I want a big dog just to call it a silly name. Some cultures do think that naming is very important, ok it might be a different view point but hardly warrents ridicule.

how completely absurd.

The people that you refer to that don't take their adult dogs seriously would still treat their dogs the same if they named them after a classical god or if they named them "Snickers".

No you posted an offence comment implying that any of us who do not have "normal" names for a dog are unworthy of dog ownership. Penut is a perfectly excepable name for a great dane. Maybe the owners happen to like that name. But I guess, since your Mr Know It All then they are unworthy or a dog

IMO it doesn't matter what you call the dog, the dog is none the wiser to whether or not he/she has a silly name :)

Oh and someone mentioned sniffing butts................My son asked me once if the dogs knew each others names from sniffing one and other butts :D

I didn't know what to say to him.................

I believe it was an opinion that was stated which really doesnt warrent name calling, which is IMO offensive.

Casablanca has a point. The more obnoxious the name, generally the more obnoxious the dog. Not in every case, and not with every dog. There are exceptions to just about everything. Though the name "Jackson/Jaxson" seems to have a special power--any dog with this name usually ends up being the frenetic, fight-inducing social outcast of the dog group. I don't know why, but my days are always a little bit more difficult with a "Jackson" in the group.

Casablanca1 I was looking for your honest opinion on what you think Riots name was like seeing as you had quite a strong opinion about the name "Peanut". Nothing rude was meant by this and I would love to hear what you have to say about it.

Do you have a dog? What did you name it??

I think it's a little bit over-the-top to suggest that a "silly/fun" name automatically means that the person caring for the dog named it in attempt to ridicule the animal, and in so doing, will also be a bad owner. It's a pretty gross generalization.

In showing dogs, half the time we WANT to name the dog something a little bit silly because that's what gets remembered in an ad...(and should we make it to Westminster, that name is going to sound darn good being said on TV! :D). Almost all the registered names I come up with have a little bit of a joke or play on words in them- it's just part of the culture. My breeder once had a single-puppy litter. She named the lone Shiba bitch "San Jo Yoko Uno."
Today, I just met a dog named "Yaygrrr," which I thought was not only hilarious, but inventive. The dog was very well-behaved and a model canine-citizen. I named my own male straight off of a sushi menu. "Tai," which is what the Japanese call red snapper. His name was most certainly a joke. Tai was a horribly nippy little red puppy, and name just stuck. Today he too is a model citizen. He adores people of all walks of life, and even enjoys hugs from enthusiastic children (hardly a typical Shiba)! And not to toot my own horn, but I'm a darn-good dog owner.

Sure, if someone is naming a dog something like "Dumb***," where it's quite obvious that the intention is to be cruel, I would agree. But I hardly feel that the owners of all the "Peanuts" out there are sub-par.
