Anyone else do this, or do you switch them to forward facing when they are 1 year/20 lbs? If you do extended rear facing, how much do your kiddos weigh/how old are they?

Also, what carseat(s) do you have?

We plan to rear face for as long as we can since it is safest. The first convertible we bought was a Britax Roundabout. The weight limits were lower for rear facing and the car seat in general. We needed a second seat so I did a ton of research and got a MyRide 65. It is a decent price, has great reviews and rear faces until 40 pounds I think and gets her to 65 pounds forward facing. I want to keep her in a harness seat for as long as possible as well.

Devin is 14 months and weighs 23 pounds.

ETA: Everytime I go to the pediatrician for a well visit they as if she is still rear facing. It is now recommended that they rear face until at least the age of 2 I believe but we plan to go longer than that.

Still rear-facing at almost 2 and will be until they outgrow the seats rear-facing... so it will be a while considering that they're almost 10 pounds and 8 inches short. They don't know better so they really don't care. Plus the seats we got go to 65 pounds forward-facing so they will last us a while too.

I plan to when I have a kiddo....Aside from people having older car seats I have no idea why they wouldn't, I know it's a pretty new thing to extend rear-facing but still, it seems pretty obviously safer to me.

I'm not about to have a kid any time soon, and therefore have no idea about different seats, but I will definitely be having my children rear facing until at least two or as long as possible.

I kept Bev rear facing until she got to long for the seat I had, she was 2 weeks short of 12 mths and i switched her over. She was way to unhappy cramped in her seat and was at the right milestones to sit forward facing. I also had the highest rated seat for length and weight. So when she outgrew that I had a eddie bauer seat and changed her to that.

All 3 of my kids got switched to a front facing seat at about 8-10 months because they had outgrown the other one. It makes them happier to be able to see out...and truth be told, my car is not compatible with rear facing seats because it is small, and the only place they fit decently is the front seat...with the airbag...so yeah they aren't going up there.

I have an Evenflo Triumph convertible. We will have it rear-facing until Mason is past a year. After that I will probably just wait and see when I will change him to forward facing.

I want to rf as long as possible for safety... we just outgrew the infant seat so I bought a True Fit, it rear faces to 35lbs and has really high top harness slots for taller kids. I'm hoping to keep her rf until at least 2-3 years.

I forgot to reply about the seats we have... We had two marathons but one of the rear-facing piece broke on one of them when we switched cars in September, so we got the Graco Myride65, which I hate with a passion because the straps are a real PITA, but it was cheap. It rear faces to 40lbs supposedly (they'll have outgrown in length before that anyway).

Otherwise heard great things about Evenflo Triumph and the True Fit.

Whatever you do, the law now is that they have to be 20 lbs AND 1 year old to go forward facing... but yeah, recommendation is 2 (I think it's 3 or something in Europe now but their seats rear face longer from what I've heard). There are plenty of scary videos on youtube and articles you can google that will tell you why it's safer.

We have a Safety 1st Avenue that we got for free because the local kmart was going out of business and Dustin had family that worked there. It rear faces up to 35 lbs. So, that will hold us off until he's older, and if we decide we'd like him to rear face even longer, then we could afford to purchase a better quality convertible that will rear face to a heavier weight. Their poor little legs look cramped, but in the case of an accident I read someone who made a really good case - better broken legs than a broken neck! That is actually probably what 'sold' me on the ERFing.

Mason is still only 17.5 lbs. Doesn't need the convertible yet, but I hope it fits in our car!

I don't think you'll find much better than 35lb for convertible carseats Tessa... I think the only one that goes to 40lb is the MyRide65 and I wouldn't spend the money on another seat just to get 5lb more, especially as I believe most kids outgrow carseats in length first.

Both Cole and Carson stayed rear-facing as long as they could. Cole probably went to forward-facing (in his convertible seat...he outgrew his infant carrier at 6 months!!) when he was about 18-months-old and Carson was about 15-months-old when I had to turn him around. Carson was a lot longer than Cole and I could no longer force him to keep his legs crammed up against the seatback.

Most convertible seats I've seen go up to 40 lbs, but the Britax and a few newer ones are hitting the 65 lb mark.

I have an Evenflow one that Cole used that Carson is now in, but Carson just has never seemed comfortable in it (longer body length I think) so he's getting a new one in the next week or two.

Cole is now in the Britax Frontier and I have yet to come across anything negative about it......even when I had to completely disassemble it after he vomited in every single crevice.

We did rearfacing w/ Chloe until about 24 mos. I always wonder what would happen if you were rear ended really hard while a kid was rear-facing.

I asked my doc about extended rear facing (LOVE our pedi, btw) and he said to keep her rear facing as long as I felt I needed (and my carseat allowed) but not to put too stress and worry too much over every new recommendation out there b/c they are constantly changing and he said if his mother were to have followed today's recommendations he would have been in a booster until he was almost 13 years old.

So, we did it until she was 14 mos.

For those that keep them rearward facing for longer, how on earth do the kids legs not get crammed up under their chins? Carson had nowhere for his legs to go and was constantly kicking the back of the seat (that he was facing) and finally got to where he screamed whenever he had to get into the car. When I turned him forward, he seemed forever grateful and hasn't cried yet when going for a ride....guessing because his legs now have room to "be free".

Well, Damien is a little guy so I don't know that it will be an issue for us.
