  This morning I let Carey outside and she is barking like crazy at something. I look outside and see she has cornered something. I figure I better go rescue neighbors' puppy or something. When I look around the tree all I see is something brown (just it's head) I thought maybe it was a squirrel that wouldn't run away (we had one of those a couple of years ago). Then I see it's a snake!! All the fur on Carey's back is standing up and she's right in front of this snake, barking like crazy. I run around to the other side of tree and call her, she ignores me. I have to scream at her to get her to back off at all. Then I act excited and start to run to house, so she follows me a little and then I get her inside. I was soooo scared. Checked her all over to see if she'd been bitten, very lucky she wasn't.

Was very scary! I called my husband and he came home from work to see if he could find it/kill it. But didn't. I know some people won't like that we'd kill it. But I don't want to take chance of it biting anyone.

I understand you not wanting it to bite anyone, but since it didn't bite Carey and her barking and cornerin it, that shows it isn't "aggressive". It probably wouldn't bite unless threatened and cornered and even then it didn't so obviously it's got some self reserve.....I'm talking about a snake! I think I've lost it

It was def trying to bite her, it struck at her several times, it just missed and it was right in front yard where we play. So I just assume it be dead.

She probably could have killed the snake but I love my dog and am not willing to risk her life!

Sadly ( not really 'cause I hate them) my goldens loved to kill snakes....2 would do tug of war and 3rd would grab the middle.... not fun to see, but a quick kill ! Luckily we had few cotton mouths so none were poisonous.

Cotton mouths mean there're some black spot on the tongue?

I heard that if a dog had some black spot on the tongue it wouldnt be hurt by a snake right??

cotton mouth is a type of a snake..most snakes are harmless and do a lot of good..the copperhead, rattle snake, and coral are three types of poisonous ones in America. The copperhead is the one that does most dogs damage..it is the most common and likes to warm itself around the foundations of buildings. There are a lot of garter snakes and black snakes that die needlessly..since the snake was non aggressive i imagine it was a garter. they usually opt to hold still or make a run for it. They are such good snakes too. Did you see what the snake looked like?

I wouldn't have been able to stand around to notice the color, spots or demeanor. I can't stand snakes. Luckily for me, we don't have many around, in the yard that is.

Sorry I didn't explain too well in the first post. The snake was aggressive, it struck at her several times and just luckily it missed her. It was pretty long but not coiled up when it struck, so wasn't a rattlesnake. It had alternating light/dark stripes. My husband says it was most likely a moccasin or oak snake. We think it may have been living in our tree in the front yard as Carey has had a fixation on the tree for awhile now and we hadn't figured out why until now. She would even put her front paws up on it to smell it. I just don't want any snake in the yard that would try to bite anything b/c it could of been my daughter that found it instead of Carey, we play in the yard alot. Plus the stupid snake is probably after our wild bunnies that live in our yard. We just got some back, neighbor's cats were catching them for awhile so we hadn't had any for awhile. I love watching the bunnies in the yard! Carey was very protective of me, when I went out to see if the snake was still there, she started barking, wanting me back in the house where it was safe. :D

Be very careful, if it's a water moccasin, they are venomly evil! I remember our Rufus coming home one time from the woods/creek with a sh*tload of big @$$ racers... huge LOOOOONG black snakes in his mouth! They were harmeless, but who would have known when you're like 5 years old!!!! He just kept bringing them... it was gross.

Entirely possible it was water moccasin, the river runs right behind the end of our property. i have no idea what different snakes look like. I don't like any of them!!
