Hey guys,

We've been taking Cissy out for car rides a little more lately. The only problem is she usually ends up puking during each ride. Is this just a puppy thing or do they grow out of it? Is there anything I can do to help alleviate it?

Thanks!

Well for long rides you can get some meds at the vet. Other than that, Boris had the same problem when he was a puppy, and he still does. I think the most annoying thing is that no matter how much he loves the walks, he just started refusing to get in the car a few months ago... We have to trick him into it everytime now. Ugh!

So I don't have a solution, hopefully someone can help, just in my experience they don't get over it :(

My brother's huskie got car sick as a pup. Now she loves riding in the car. So, it is certainly possible that your pup will grow out of it. My dog as a puppy never got car sick. So, it would seem car sickness is not universal to all puppies.

Some ideas that might help:

Go for very short rides, 5 - 10 minutes, around your block and slowly increase the drive time. This will help him get used to the motion of the car.

If that is still too much, just try sitting in the car with your dog and not drive. The anxiety they feel in the car could be adding to the problem.

If these don't work, check with your vet. There might be some medication that they can give you for the longer trips that are necessary for your dog to go on.
