I'm looking for a SLR to get me started this summer, since I'm going into digital photography in the fall and have the chance to get my hands on one of these... thoughts?

This is the one that I have. I love it, and I find it is perfect for what I need, since it is cheap (compared to others) and really it is just for personal use.

Should mention that things may go that I get a different, newer, camera after, once I've got a better handle on a DSLR at all. For now this would just be to get me started and get the hang of some things, since the most complex I've gotten in terms of photography is fooling around with my Canon Powershot S3 IS.

I had a Canon Rebel XS, now have the XT, (I sold the XS when I was in a pinch for money, and a few weeks later found the XT for a super cheap price, so I got it). I can't really tell the difference between the two. I actually think I like the XT better, but it might be all in my head. Perfect first dslr, imo. I never had one either and the XS was so super easy. I remember being sooo amazed by the quality with my lack of effort. I just had it on auto and the pictures turned out amazing (atleast coming from a P&S). I sometimes hate the bulkiness of a DSLR but I don't think I can ever go back to p&s quality. To be honest, I still don't really know a whole lot about what my camera can do.... but I'm very satisfied with all my pictures simply on auto, and sports mode.

I don't think bulky will be a problem, honestly. My point & shoot looks like this:

So I'm used to kinda bulky. And I'll still have this one for video, but the rebel would go just about every where else with me, I have a feeling. Mom has the chance to get this one for a realllllllllllly good deal, and if all works out, I'll be getting it, even if it just means playing around and getting used to a DSLR this summer and then buying a newer/better camera late 2011 or early 2012.

I would say it's the Canon version of the Nikon D40. :)

Definitely for a starter camera! I would buy a cheaper camera and save your money for a nice lens or two...or three...or four. hahaha

That's my plan for now! The school I'm going to in the fall will have lenses to fit Canon cameras, so that's why I'm going with a Canon. I figure this one will get me through school, and after that I can get what I want.

Mom's trading things for this camera, hopefully, so it's more or less free.

I'm excited. I've got myself into the habit of taking quite a few pictures, now, so I'm eager to get my hands on a DSLR, even if it's only a starters quality. Good for me to START with, lol.
