Hope I spelled it right,

Anyways, we have been feeding Nutro Ultra, and for the price and how little you get for the price, we have see no drasticly amazing changes in our dogs. We were going to switch back to the Natural Choice, but its given us red coats.

So a friend of ours suggested Canidae... she even gave me a couple ziploc bags full of it to try, and the guys really like it.

pros? cons? do you feed it?

For the most part, I would say Canidae is WAY better than the other foods you mentioned in your post. I know you get way more of it for a lot less money and it's actually better quality than Nutro or Sensible Choice.

Many Chaz dogs eat it and have fabulous results. My only issue with it is a palatability one. I find that some dogs get tired of it easily and some don't. I actually just put Alice back on Canidae Chicken and Rice and she'll be fed that through her pregnancy with canned.

I don't really care for it and Caiza didn't either :( I like anything by Natura like Evo, California natural, Reg. Innova. Why not try one of those foods? Better quality for your show babies :D I just recently put Caiza on Natures Variety raw with outstanding results. But I only have the one dog. I know you have a few more and it is pricey :)

I would do Innova, but around here you have to have it delivered, they dont sell it in any of the local places, and I cant afford to buy as many as they require at one time to get it delivered here ( I think its like 10 bags)

my crew eat canidae--no problems here! I do add a little olive oil to the kibble--they really seem to like it that way, and Baxter tended to have dry skin otherwise.

We feed it. I really haven't seen any changes in the dogs from Purina to Canidae except for stool. I'm hoping to go to EVO soon.

I would recommend you try EVO, TWO, or Cal. Natural. Grain free and I'm sure it would make a difference with your show babies. :)

I like canidae chicken meal and rice kibble. I also like Eagle Pack too. If I had a little more money I'd be feeding the Eagle Pack but with having to buy two different formulas it turns out to be more expensive.

I have acutally tried the Innova, and even the California Natural... but I just really wasnt impressed. I went thru a period for about a year were Spider refused to eat almost everything I fed her. She was loosing weight insanly and I couldn't even show her because her show weight was terrible. I tried it all from Bil Jac frozen food, to even thier dry food ( I know ick, but was desperate for something the dog would eat) even the raw diet she refused. So we finally settled on Nutro Ultra which she liked, but its still not what Im looking for in a food, and since I heard its bought out by pedigree, sorry, but Im moving onto something else.

But I will def. try the canidae, and if that doesnt work I might go back to Innova or California Natural.

If you look at the first six ingredients in Canidae and California Natural, they are virtually identical. It's an interesting comparison. Canidae has a better protein and fat content unless you feed the CN puppy formulas. I personally prefer the fact that Canidae uses chicken fat as the main fat source where CN uses sunflower oil. The chicken fat is more biologically available than a plant derived fat source.

California Natural Chicken & Rice
Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Flaxseed

Canidae Chicken & Rice
Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal,

I fed it to Virgo for awhile...I have to say that I liked her better on the Innova. Not to mention that somehow one of the bags my aunt bought at the co-op seemed to be bad somehow and sparked a whole huge thing with vomiting....

But I know tons of people who feed it and love it and it's something I would feed to Sawyer if I couldn't afford Innova.

My dogs are all on Canidae...we rotate ALS, L&R, and C&R, usually one type each month...they're on 25% canned, and 75% dry...

All of my dogs do great on it, and so do most of my fosters...

We went through a bag of Canidae. CeCe really went for it in the beginning but wasn't as enthused by the time we got near the end of the bag.

She's really enjoying the Solid Gold Hund n' Floken. LOL, It makes gold colored stools too!

:lol-sign:

Why is Innova regular or California Natural better quality than Canidae? After all, Innova adult does contain barley.

Well Herschel Canidae DOES contain 2 or 3 grains out of the first 4-5 ingredients..........some dogs DO NOT do well with that, and some do. EVERY dog is different. Red just said that she doesn't care for it, and neither did Caiza........she never said it wasn't a quality food.

One of my dogs liked it, the other didn't........go figure. I would say give it a shot Ryan, if/when Spy stops liking it, or you see results you don't like.........SWITCH, that simple :)

I'm just wondering the reasons for Innova being better quality.

After all, 4 out of the first 8 ingredients in Innova are carbohydrates/grains (Barley, Brown Rice, Potato, Rice). There are only 2 grains in the first 8 ingredients of Canidae. (Brown rice, White rice)

I've heard the "Innova is better quality" bit a lot and I can never understand it. Someone please explain!

Exactly Angie,

She has gotten now, after a yr almost, of just not liking the nutro . I dont blame her haha.

So if she does/doesnt like it, then we will switch .

I've never fed Canidae to my dogs, but it has good ingredients.

My dogs are all on grainfree diets (normally Orijen, but we're trying CORE right now). They were all on Timberwolf Organics, and when we switched to grainfree we noticed that their coats became a lot softer (not to mention their stools became smaller and even less smelly).

What about TWO or Orijen? Raw? Honest Kitchen?
TWO and Honest Kitchen are ridiculourly expensive around here - no way am I spending upwards of $150 a month to feed my dogs. Orijen is not available in my area.

Canidae is the best bet for us, and the dogs love it - it's inexpensive, with premium ingredients, a wonderful program for competiton and performance households, and a staff that will answer your questions with a personal email or call, instead of a generated mass email or a complicated web of phone recordings.

Grainfree - I'd like to feed it, if it wasn't so darn expensive around here. Maybe if Ronin goes down to less food consumed per day after he's neutered in a few years...maybe. But until then, my dogs still eat ten cups of food a day, between the three of them.

Ilsa did great on the Natura products... for awhile. Then Cal Nat started turning her orange, Evo plugged her up, and Innova gave her the runs. Ronin did well on Innova and Evo, but at 6-8 cups of food a day, he was eating my out of house and home.

Raw? Homecooked? I was fully prepared to switch to it if Canidae ended up being part of the recall, but it was going to cost me $40 a week to feed either one correctly. Many people have cheap meat sources, but I was unable to find one after months of searching. Beef was $2.00 a lb minimum, turkey was $1.75 a lb minimum, RMBs were not given out by any of the butchers or meat lockers in a 2 hour radius. Not to mention I have no room for a freezer to hold such large amounts of meat and other ingredients. So... it wasn't something I was going to do unless I absolutely had to.

YAY CANIDAE!
