I get the canidae chicken and rice dry dog food. We just got a bag on the 31st and the color of the food is lighter. Taz (yorkie), seems to have an upset stomach and threw up once and had diareah.(sp) Not sure if it's from the food or not. Anyone else get this food and notice it being a different color? I am going to call the store tomorrow and ask them if they know anything about it.

Canidae changed their formulas a few months back, when was the last time (before this) that you bought a new bag? (Perhaps the store where you buy it doesn't have a very quick turnover...)

Most people feeding it switched off of it to something new, as they were dissatisfied with the new formulas. My store stopped carrying it entirely.

Thanks, I just finished reading the threads in the food section. I had bought a big bag and kept it frozen in the freezer so I hadn't bought any for quite a while. I am going to read more on the other threads. What kind did you switch to?

I was feeding Canidae also...and switched to Eagle Pack Holistic...I was really happy with it, but hit some hard times and found a cheaper food that seems to have pretty good ingredients in it Premium Edge, the dogs seem really happy with it, I haven't noticed any changes in their coats or energy since the switch and it's $30 cheaper than the Eagle Pack.

Yep, switched here too, at the moment we are using Diamond Naturals mixed with homecooked food.

Canidae will NEVER have my trust or money again. I find it hard to take that they just changed the formula without a word of warning to their customers. So many dogs have issues with food, and to find one that works only to have it changed without your knowledge? WRONG! Makes you wonder how many vet bills were created by people thinking their dog was sick instead of just adjusting to a new food!

The pet supply store located nextdoor to the clinic actually quit carrying it due to the drastic, negative changes.

That's why I went to Diamond Naturals and they're all doing great on it.

Wow! This is informative. I had no idea they switched ingredients. My dogs have always done well on it. They still have had no negative consequences. But my dogs aren't sensative to food matters. So, what did they do to the formula? Does anyone know? I have a limited access to much variety of premium foods in the area I live in. So, what might be good? I can get Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. But that one has pretty large size kibbles. My smallest Chi prefers the tiny size like Canidae has. I am not sure what else I can get but I don't think it's a wide choice. I do have a Petco and Petsmart in a city which is an hour and a half away. I have a feed store an hour away but they mostly carry Nutro in addition to the ones I mentioned. So....any thoughts?

The new Canidae grain-free ALS is supposed to be about as close to the original formula as you can get. We tried a 20-pound bag of it after Canidae sent us a coupon. It's not bad. But by now we've already switched to Taste of the Wild, and we're not switching back. But yes, we had to get our dogs off the new Canidae because even after 2 bags, they were still pooping yellow soft-serve. This was after eating Canidae for something like 2 years. Needless to say, we were a bit upset and feeling like they'd pulled the rug out from under us.

You may want to do a search "Canidae complaints" on the internet, there are a bunch of them. There is also a response from Canidae to the consumer affairs. I don't remember all the changes as it has been several months but I changed and so did the breeder. I am now feeding Merrick BG but am still not 100% sure what I will stay with, just not Canidae.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Personally, I think I like the idea of some grain of some sort, like maybe oats...a little non-digestable stuff may be beneficial.

Venus barfed up the new version of ALS and then refused to touch it, so I switched her to Blue Buffalo temporarily (because I could get it at the Petsmart down the street) and then to Wellness. Argus finished off the new ALS without any trouble and then switched to Wellness as well.

Proto you're back!

Canidae used to be part of Strider's rotation but after the change he always had giant stools and a lot of undigested starchy stuff in it. We rotated it out and now he pretty much gets the TOTW wildfowl rotated with TOTW venison and bison along with home cooked/raw. We tried wellness core and he lost a lot of weight and started blowing coat so we stopped after the one bag.

Doberluv, the Petcos and Petsmarts around here have been carrying brands like Solid Gold, Avoderm, and Natural Balance. Not the best value for the money, but overall they are better than Nutro. I think they carry blue buffalo too. Have you asked the feed store about special ordering any other brands?

I can't remember what size avoderm and natural balance kibbles are, but I think the Solid Gold kibbles are on the smaller side. Sometimes you can write to the companies and ask for free samples.

Solid Gold has flat, dime-sized kibbles, at least on some of their formulas. At least they used to. I'm really no help at all, am I? LOL! Been a few years since we fed SG.
