 I am confused, did Canidae change their ingredients slightly? Below is what I found on the Canidae website for their original All Life Stage food.

Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

Here is what is listed on Pet Food Direct for the same formula:

I see brewers yeast is in the second list along with fish meal instead of herring meal:confused:

Anyone know why?

Changing herring meal to fish meal is not a good change:(

I don't know why they would do that though...maybe because it's cheaper.

I know, that is why I am concerned. The Canidae website still has the herring meal listed...? Maybe Mordy will know more about it.

My bags of Canidae both have herring meal on it...perhaps the people typing up the ingredient list on Pet Food Direct just made an oopsie, thinking it wouldn't matter?

The second list is the old ingredients. Some websites have not updated their ingredient lists, and even the little sample bags of Canidae ALS have not been updated with the new list.

Thanks for the info guys. I feel better now. I was thinking of buying a bag tomorrow. I'll check the bag before I buy as well.

PetFoodDirect is not very good about keeping product information up to date. It's always better to check themanufacturer's site. :)

Ah ha.. I recently started feeding Canidae again and I swore the ingredients on the new bag were different than when I was previously feeding it .

I even emailed Canidae and they said the formula had not changed at all.

Mordy, Do you know when they changed the formula?

The whole thing about Canidae claiming they didn't change formulas is a really sorry story. The vehemently denied (and keep denying) that the changes were anything but "corrections of typos", yet I have proof of changes in the formulation between 12/11/03 and 12/12/2004.

I even alerted the WDJ to it since Canidae kept stonewalling and eventually ignoring me, and they wrote back that they agreed this was not good business and that they were going to follow up with the manufacturer, but it never happened, or at least I never heard anything more about it.

This is one of the things why I still hold other brands in higher esteem than Canidae, even though they make nice products and sell at a good price.

I am glad I went with the Eagle Pack Holistic Select instead of the Canidae. I have heard better things about Eagle as a company from multiple sources and when I had a question regarding the ingredients in their diets they wrote me back right away.

To me, after what happened with the Diamond Pet foods it is really important to not just feed quality food, but feed quality food made by a quality company.:)

That's what stumped me too. Why would Canidae not want to admit to improving their formula? That's just odd.

I actually switched from Eagle Pack Holistic Select Fish and Oatmeal to Canidae. Basically the reason for the switch was a fluke really. I had bought Canidae for my female Saint pup, Lola. Lola doesn't have any allergies or intolerances so there was no need to feed her a fish-based kibble. But Bubba my other Saint who has a super sensitive tummy ripped open the bag of Canidae and ate an unknown amount. When he didn't get diarrhea or tummy upset I was curious so I started switching him over to Canidae. He's been eating nothing but Canidae for over a week now with no issues so far.

I had tried Bubba on Canidae about September/October of 2004 and it didn't agree with him AT ALL. When I looked at the ingredients on this new bag right away I knew they were different. The herring meal I caught right away. That's when I emailed Canidae and starting searching.

To be honest I do like Eagle's holistic line. I did wonders for Bubba's loose stool problem, and his fur is nice and glossy. But I just could not keep weight on him. He was up to 8-9 cups a day and he was still thin. If I reduced that amount he starting losing weight. I don't know protein/fat content just wasn't high enough or what. But I didn't want to have to pack more food into him just to get him up to weight and maintain it.

Also it kinda irritated me that Eagle is 'upgrading' their formulas but not removing the beet pulp. What's up with that?

Ok maybe I should clarify that.. In my pups case it was just helping mask his loose stool issue. So I prefer a food without it so I can gauge how well he's digesting/processing his food. Does that make sense? LOL

I agree with you--I think it masks problems. A food that would normally cause a loose stool doesn't necessarily due to the addition of beet pulp.

I realize the importance of fiber in the diet, but it shouldn't be a crutch for poor ingredients.

Actually, depending on the individual dog's digestive tract, other sources of fiber can have that exact same effect, not just beet pulp.

In high quality foods the amount of beet pulp used doesn't exceed 5% of the total formulation, so it really isn't like an excessive amount is used as a stool hardener.
