We put an invisible fence up and I love it. They will get collars to put on and a high pitch sould will sound off about 6 feet from the actual shock line. They have been trained to step back go to a safe spot when they hear that sound before they get shocked.
Now, they sometimes go out without the collar on and still will not go past the line. They have gotten to know where the limits are. See, we were having a problem with our dogs following behind our daily walkers from the neighborhood and barking at them. They were'nt chasing them, just walking behind them barking their heads off all the way down the street. Needless to say, we were getting complaints. OMG I remember one morning, I had to run out of the house with my nightie and housecoat yelling at them down the street to 'COME" and apologizing to the unfortunate, now annoyed, neighbor. Thank god I remembered the housecoat. LOL Now, they basically know they aren't going nowhere and go outside to do their business and get right back in the house. They aren't outside very long. We just installed the fence in the fall, but when the nice weather comes back EVENTIALLY! ... lol ... they will hang outside with us sitting on the deck or the like. I never leave them out by themselves for a long period of time.
Everytime I let them out I always say "No Bark, Be Careful, Come Right Back' LOL the things we do!
If you decide on the invisible fence, you will definately have to get the company to provide training sessions with the dog or dogs. Mine got the gist of it quickly and like I said, sometimes I don't feel like getting the collars on and they still will not wander off.
Oh yeah, your probably looking at close to $1,000.00 for installation and training. Oh, and I'm paying 100.00 a year for both dog's batteries.
