I just had the patient from he!! in here a little bit ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was in herself in March for a prenatel blood draw. I had trouble getting her blood that day apparantly....I really don't remember her to be honest. So....she came in today with her 10 day old baby for his second PKU. I warmed his heel...poked it with the lancet and didn't get a good blood flow. She said "is there someone else here who can do this"? "When I was here last time you had trouble getting my blood and I'm not going to let you poke my baby a thousand times". I said...no...I'm the only one here but you are more than welcome to go to the main hospital lab. She said that's what she would do. When she walked out...under her breath she said "this is ridiculous". I was saying something else under my breath!!!:p In the 10 years that I've worked here....I can count on one hand how many bad experiences I've had. What a day!!!!!!!!!!

Meh if I miss a vein on a dog (even if it's the shortest, rolliest vein in the world) most clients ask if someone else can do it. Then when they miss too we have to get someone else, and so on until it gets to the vet (usually they're just the third person).

People expect perfection, even if it isn't your fault that you didn't get it right the first time.

Don't take it too hard. Today i got stuck 4 times. I d idn't complain.
I don't ever get mad at someone when they can't get my blood or get an iv started. I know they're doing the best they can.

I'm good with needles now...I usually can get most everyone. Oh well...we all have our days!!

Sorry Dena. I don't have veins I have organ pipes lol. Anyone can find them . I rarely get stuck more then once and I warn them to watch out because I will spray when they change the tubes and I do lol. Now there have been times that depending on what is wrong with me and if I am a bit dehydrated etc they have had trouble finding the vein. It is life and they should not get mad. What ever there are just nasty people. Everyone knows I am lol

I have horrid veins in my arms. I have wonderful veins in my hands, both hands....whenever I tell the person trying to give me an IV to just use my hands, they insist that they must use my arms because it's not as painful. After three different nurses poke me, blow my veins and then give up, finally they resort to my hands because everything else is blown.

THAT is what frustrates me. I TOLD them that in the first place.

I don't mind if someone tries and misses...but when they don't listen to me, that's when I get perturbed. I understand hand veins hurt more, but they hurt less to get poked there once than 12 times in the arms...ya know.

Sorry you had a rough day. I wish when I had a rough day, I could poke people with needles. :p

Yes I can say B!otch!

You've brought me out of lurking mode to respond to this post! I'm not in the medical field, but I work as a nutritionist in a public health setting that provides our clients with a great service and saves them lots of money(well, in my opinion at least). Some of these people feel that they don't need to adhere to policy and procedure and are really disrespectful to me and fellow staff on a daily basis. I had a particularly bad day today. Anyway, I know how it feels to have someone basically crap on you and your profession. I'm so sorry for your experience, but you're not alone. My mottto is be breathe, be calm, and bite your tongue. LOL! Take care!

The veins in my arm are tiny tiny. They have to use those butterfly things to draw any blood out.

I have fairly large veins, to the point where they bulge out of my skin slightly. My brachial is large and when I went in to get blood drawn once the nurse pulled another nurse (I'm assuming she was less experienced, she was certainly younger) over to me and said "now you should be able to hit his veins" and she did.

I always take my patients suggestions first. If I can't get it then I do it my way. :) The patient is usually always right anyway...they know their bodies.

I really had to pat myself on the back for how I handled her. I didn't get mad at all. I remained professional the whole time....it was hard though!!!! I pride myself on my customer service and try to always be kind and do my best everyday. Today was pushing it though!!!!:D

I actually used a lot of butterflies today. It's been hot here the past few days and it's really hot in our office!!!! One of our Dr's weighs about 90 pounds and she's always freezing. The thermostat is in her office. A few days ago she had the heat on!!!!!!!!!!!!:yikes:

Yes, I know the feeling. It's so hard to keep your mouth shut sometimes, but it feels so good coming out the better person in the end though.

Sigh. I used to work in an ER, and was in medic school for a while, so I've drawn more stupid labs on obnoxious people then I care to count. I totally feel for you Dena. I will say though, I have a bit of a gag reflex when it comes to someone needing two sticks to get my blood, mostly because I know I could have gotten it myself, I have great veins. I do try to have patience...I will say though I almost cursed out the guy who missed my arterial blood gas stick and hit my nerve! Here's hoping you don't have to deal with abnoxious people for a while. And hey, if they are obnoxious you can write here about it so we can all make fun of them with you :D

What are the 'butterfly thingies'? Are they those things with the weird rollers on them?

The first (and last) time I gave blood they brought out these roller things and went to town on the tube trying to coax out as much blood as they could get (apparently I only bleed well into serum tubes and not blood bags). Always wondered what they were for as they didn't seem to do much good either way.
