My sister-in-law wants to get a new puppy but can't decide on what breed of dog to get. She is married, stay at home mother to a 10 month old boy, and wants a small dog.
I suggested the Corgi since that is the pup I plan on getting, but she wants to "shop around"
so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! :)

I wouldn't suggest a herding breed with a little kid around. they need a lot of time and corgis have to be the worst shedders in the world! What is she looking for toher than size? How much activity, coat type etc?

A corgi is definately NOT a little dog:p

I agree with Gaddy. A shelter dog would be wonderful. :)
If she doesn't want to go with a shelter dog, she could look at Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (from a reputable breeder or a rescue), they're lovely, gentle dogs who are great with children.

With a young baby, I personally wouldn't get a puppy , and I've seen some pretty snappy Terriors and Doxies. I'd go rescue where you see what you get. I wish she'd consider a larger dog .... from the day my grandson was born he lay next to , crawled over etc goldens and labs. When you look up breeds, they usually say how they are with babies and children.

Tell her to do her research! Terriers have a VERY high drive and are VERY energetic. They require tons of excercise and mental stimulation. They are very smart and tenacious. If I remember correctly, scotties aren't usually a good choice for children.

A daschund may be a better choice, but the ones I have come in contact with in my vet clinic days were usually biters and less than tolerant LOL! Sorry, but that has been my personal experience. Anyway, I would also make sure that she watches her child VERY closely if she chooses this breed, their backs are prone to injury and they need to be picked up and handled with care so there is not added stress on their back etc.

Either way, good luck to her :)
