My pom's teeth could use a good cleaning (tarter build up from lack of brushing).
Can I thoroughly 'pick'/clean his teeth to remove the build-up without going to the vet?

I've seen a TV vet chip the buildup from a dogs tooth to show the client what's there, but I think you'd need to have a proper clean as they get up under the gums.

For a small dog - they are well known for having bad teeth... I haven't met one small dog that didn't have bad teeth as they aged.

SOO a dental done at the vets office is usually WELL worth the money.

Depending on how bad the tartar has built up - you can still get it off.

You can push up the gums slightly to see where the tartar starts then scratch downard underneath the tartar to get rid of it.

Riot gets his teeth brushed almost daily, and his teeth scraped about once a week by me. He still has really nice white pearlies :)

Have you tried giving the pom a raw meaty bone (such as a beef knuckle bone or the like?)

Raw bones keep teeth clean, and they can also help scrape off some of the tartar that is already built up. :)

I would suggest some chicken backs or necks. They are great teeth scrubbers and really work wonders at breaking away tartar, of course they do have to be raw fed.

it isnt a fast fix, but a great one none the less, not to mention a wonderful preventative.
