Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. But I'm glad to hear that your girl's okay.
Ultimately, she is the most important thing and the vet feels she'll be back to normal in a week or so. I just have to pay close attention to be sure she doesn't develop pyometra, but I know what to watch for, so she's in good hands. ;)

I'm glad that it was with a friend . I never had an absorbed litter , but wondered if some would say ... " Not my fault ...my dog did his job !"

I would think that some unscrupulous breeders might - if they've proven their stud was fertile with a sperm check prior to breeding, then technically it would be her "fault" - but I've never known anyone to do that. If there are no live puppies on the ground, you both lose out; you don't have puppies and the stud owner doesn't have offspring to show that his qualities can be passed on.

I'm so sorry colliewog - glad Smidgin is okay though. Better luck next time. (And keep all those Unlucky Collie Pregnancy Monsters busy in Florida for the next 2 weeks, okay?)

^^^^ I was wondering about that too . I know what it's like to want to continue a line , but not at the cost of the dam .

Omg, Colliewog, I am so sorry to hear about Smidgen's miscarriage. =,( I can only imagine how disappointing this must be.

Thank goodness Smidge is doing well! She really is a stunning girl... I LOVE your Smoothies, they are some of the most well built and athletic I've ever seen... I really hope she has a big, healthy litter next time.

I have never bred dogs, but as far as the question about breeding a bitch who has absorbed a litter, it can happen for MANY reasons or none at all. I know a very reputable breeder whose bitch absorbed her litter because of a short plane flight, but she went on to produce a healthy litter the next year.

Ah, darn about no puppies but I'm glad your girl is doing fine! Fingers crossed for a successful breeding the next time around.

I plan on breeding her daughter at the end of the year and then see what happens. I might breed Smidgen again next year (skip a heat after this, so next heat will be 2010). She'll be 6 then and if I'm going to do it, that would be the time, or else I'll retire her. So I guess it all really depends on Dora. There is no obvious reason that the vet could find for the reabsorbtion, so we're chalking it up to just "one of those things".

You are correct - her life and well being is the most important thing and I'll have that in the forefront when I decide what to do when her next "available" heat comes along.

Sounds like a good plan .... skipping a heat is good .
If there is any issue near the heat or something like this, I always skip one heat to give time for the hormones to regulate. The vet actually said she should be fine to breed as soon as she comes into heat again, but I'm making the decision to wait. Besides, now I can get her out to some trials that we would have missed otherwise ... :p

I'm sure you will do what's best for her . I can see breeding the next heat if it was a false pregnancy but this was an absorbed litter . A lot of hormone issues .

The hormone issues here would be (to me) the same as if she had the litter, since there was a pregnancy, so I personally like to give a "free" heat to "recover", whether there was an actual birth or not.
