I've been giving Charlie Benadryl for his allergies and it seems to hype him up. I thought it would make him sleepy, like it does me??????????

it could, i guess. nyquil hypes me up.

it seems to have no affect on Milo's energy level, and it made my eskie very sleepy... i think it depends on the individual dog.

Major side effect of benadryl, or diphenhydramine, is sleepiness, but everyone is different. My twelve year old gets positively manic.

It used to make my son hyper when he was just a toddler, so I can see it being the same with some dogs.

Even tranquilizers seems to have an opposite affect on my dog Tilly. I gave her some prescribed tranquilizers last year during the fireworks event. (the fire works are just down our street) Instead of going to sleep or even being somewhat drowsy she was jumping around and freaked out by the fireworks.

Me too. I figured (and hoped) it would do the same to Charlie. No such luck. Now I don't know what to give him for his allergies. Vet gave him Hydroxizine but it did NOTHING for him.

Yes, the adult form of Benadryl can make kids and dogs hyper. Not sure why that is, but I can't give it to any of my dogs without them bouncing of the walls.

He was on an antibiotic -Cephelexin - with the Benadryl for a few days but he's off of that now and has been for several days and he's still hyper as can be.

Milo's Nyquil has a pseudophrenilin (sp) in it doesn't it? Benedryl is straight antihistimine.

benadryl in normal quantities ahould generally just make your dog sleepier, but then there are exceptions. maybe your dog behaves differently to it. ask ur vet for an alternative

I already did. The only thing she suggests is Hydroxizine, which doesn't work.

I would ask your vet if the childrens Benadryl would work just as well. It's actually recommended not to give adult benadryl to kids because of hyperactivity. I would think it's the same for dogs...at least it is for my guys.

When I was a kid I took liquid Benadryl for my alergies. It gave me tons of energy. Now one pill puts me to sleep. We use it for a sleep aid every now and again if we need one. I guess everyone is different. Sorry.

Nothing as far as... what exactly?

Have you had any allergy tests done? Benadryl made Buddy very sleepy. We used a generic brand from Walmart.

Meaning he was still itching and scratching like crazy.

I haven't had allergy testing done but have ruled out many things over the past several months and have pretty well come to the conclusion that the problems are your standard pollen/grass allergies. So I bathe him as often as possible - at least weekly - to get the allergens off but I don't know what else to do.

Benadryl was really helping with the itchiness but it's like he's on crack.

I reccomend havingh the allergy test done. I never would have thought that Buddy was allergic to the things that they came up with in the results.

You can have anecdotes made which will make your dog feel better if his allergies are that severe. Now that we know what Buddy is allergic to, we act on it. The best $200 dollars we've spent on him (except for saving his life :) ).
