Hi all,

Does anyone camp, canoe, or portage with their dogs? I love the Boundary Waters, and would love to enjoy it with my corgi, so I'm looking for tips on how to make her camping-friendly.

Thanks!

Oo!! I go camping just about every weekend with my pack ;)
The hardest part was teaching my GSD to take it easy in the cramped quarters of my camper, or that tents are for laying down only because she's so big. Some dogs get overstimulated by the new scents and surroundings and their brains fal out of their ears, so visiting new areas often and socializing is a must.

My Charlie is supposed to be a Corgi, and he's real easy to camp with now that he's with me and is used to it.

If you have any other specific questions about camping, I'd be glad to help :D

I'm envious of your MN address. I love the BWCA, but I've never made the trip with my pooches. I have passed a few at the portages though. I would bet you could find someone from Piragis Northwoods Co. in Ely to give you some info. Online I think they are The Boundary Waters Catalog.

I did quite a bit of the canoeing with my Lab when he was young, not so much of the whole wilderness tripping thing though. But he would have been superb at it! Now there are maybe too many big dogs and I'd have to draw straws. One tip that comes to mind relates to having been caught in a few sudden squalls with high winds/swells and crazy lightning every time I made it to the Boundary Waters. My golden would have had us both out of the boat under those conditions. I would seriously have your dog accustomed to wearing floatation, and make sure it has a handle. Maybe practice getting him back in the boat without swamping! Sounds like fun though.
