Camera lens help?

Okay, so my brother has a pretty nice Canon Rebel Xs. He loves taking pics and hes really good at it, so *lightbulb* why not get him a lens for xmas?!?!
But there are so many!
What's a good beginner lens, a must have?

What lens came with it?

Mine came with an 18-55mm IS lens. My next lens will be a 75-300mm.

50mm f/1.8? Although I don't think the Canon version is as cheap as the Nikon one.

I'd probably get him the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS or the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6, just looking at Canon's site and seeing what lenses they have. Both of those lenses are reasonably priced by the looks of things, and I know I use my Nikkor 55-200mm way more than I ever used my 18-55mm. I love my 50mm f/1.4 as well, but I'm glad I got my 55-200mm first.

I just bought the Nikon d5000. I've heard the 300mm lense is quite poor at 300mm. I'd go with the 200mm. It will be my next lense.
