Hi!
So, I'm asking for some of your pets to be guinea pigs again. Here's the deal:
I've been practicing digital painting more. I tend to have varying styles, but my style for pet portraits tends to lean towards "realistic cartoon" like these:
They have an "inked" outline, and then colour. Part of why I use this method is because it's very formulaic - I can guesstimate my hourly wage easily because I can accurately predict how long it will usually take me to do a portrait in this style. Sketch takes x minutes, inks take x hours, colour takes x hours. Calculate wage, done.
Lately I've been playing with more of a painterly style. A few friends of mine are mind-blowingly skilled at digital painting in various forms, using the same software I use, so I've been apprenticing under them some. The results aren't terrible so far, but I could improve.
Examples (not pets of course - the first was a paid commission and the second is a personal characterthing):
Now, not only do I want to experiment with pets, I want to experiment with a more exaggerated style to go with it - I don't like doing plain old painted standard pet portraits. They're a dime a dozen elsewhere, as I'm noticing even more now that I'm on a pet portrait forum and I seem to be the only one who does things a bit differently (some of you guys should join - I LOVE the varied styles of the artists on Chaz!).
I don't know exactly HOW I want to play with this yet, it's all open-ended.
So, if you want to submit your pet to potentially be tested in my who-knows-what endeavours, now's the time.
Things:
1. As with any time any artist on here asks for reference pets: I may use your pet, I may not. Since these are freebies and for the purpose of my own personal experimentation, I'll pick whatever pet tickles my fancy at a given time for what I want to try. Don't take it personally and please for the love of goD don't hint and whine if I don't pick you.
2. I will send you the finished piece (either via Chaz PM or email) and ask your permission before posting it elsewhere, and you can say no without obligation. Regardless, the painting will be yours to keep and I'll be happy to send you a high-res copy as well.
3. You can request progress images, but I may or may not be able to deliver. I'll be doing these in my small gaps of spare time.
4. All animals are welcome, but try to pick one of your pets and give me 3-5 reference images, as opposed to one pic of each pet in your household or whatever.
5. I'll definitely be streaming the progress whenever I can, so watch my "Allie Draws Live" thread for deets. I'll try and do some of these during my evening hours so more people can watch, but no promises.
ETA: 6. As I'm working on these in my spare time as mentioned above, NO timelines or anything, I honestly have no clue. I might have some done in the next few weeks, or I may get none done. Paid work has to come first, especially right now, and I won't burn myself out.
Thanks in advance, guys! I trust you all to keep this within Chaz, as well - I always give you guys this opportunity first because you have all been by best customers and promoters, and I like to repay the karma whenever I can. <3
