My next dog gonna be a Cairn Terrier, so I'm just wondering if anyone got experience with that breed, and got anything interesting to tell me?
Anything is interesting :)

We had a Cairn when I was about 8. An untrained, unneutered male. Well, being a terrier, my parents ended up taking Scruffy to "the farm". I learned later what that was. I hope my parents never have a dog again!

On a brighter note, there's a happy Cairn that attends the same agility trials was I do, and does an excellent job at it.

Just remember, terriers will be terriers! My friend has a Border Terrier and two Airedale Terriers. She says that they'll do what they're asked once, but if you ask them a second time, they'll say, "What's the point? I already did that once!".

i have a border terrier, and that attitude is why they need alot of training,

cairn terriers are lovely dogs, but not quite as fiesty as other terriers

My first dog was a Cairn Terrier named Pepper. I had the pleasure of having that dog for almost 19 years (I put her down when she was 4 months shy of turning 19). She was an amazing dog full of love & playfullness. She put up with me & my 3 brothers when we were youngers, HOWEVER, she was a nipper & had no problem putting us kiddies in our place when we got too rough or mishandled her in some way. In fact, it was that dog that taught me how to respect dogs (of course if we got nipped, Pepper didn't get into trouble, my parents asked "What did y'all do to the dog?":D ).

As a pup, she was very hard to potty train. However, smaller dogs tend to take longer than larger dogs & terriers are pretty stubborn anyways. On the other hand, she trained pretty easily (sit, down, stay, etc.). She was very playful & tolerated most of our mishandlings. But she was quick to nip when we deserved it. She was also pretty nippy & guardian like with strangers. She needed LOTS of outside time to run & play....& DIG! Digging was a great hobby of hers & all us kiddies would go out & dig in the dirt with her. (My dad then built us human kids a sandbox to dig in vs. diggin up the backyard.)

She got along with a few other dogs, but was pretty DA. In fact, one of my APBTs will forever bear a scar on her nose from 12lb Pepper Dawg. :lol-sign:

As far as grooming goes, we had her hand stripped to keep her coat to standard for almost 10 years, but she always hated it so as she got older, we just started getting her shaved. She tolerated that much better for some reason, but once you start shaving a Cairn, their coat DOES change. It went from very coarse & wirey to somewhat soft.

I got Pepper when she was 6 & had her until I was 25. I would give anything to have that little girl back. She was my best friend.:(

I grew up with a Cairn: http://pianomedia.com/tasha

She was not an affectionate dog. She was dominant, and barky, and exciteable. However, she was very good and patient with children for some reason, and was also very good when I was sad.

I believe her problems were all caused by my parents being absolutely clueless about raising a dog. Terriers need good training and to be kept busy. I know that now. I wish I had been old enough to do something about her, because I don't believe she was a happy dog. I adored her anyway, though...

My first dog was a Cairn... Toto.. very original, I know.

Anyway, his temperment was AWESOME! If you can deal with the digging, they are great lil dogs.

I had my little Cairn for 16 years. he was very, very active for the first couple years! but he was sweet natured, trained easily, no problems whatsoever with potty training. he was a little yapper, tho...not always a joy for the neighbors. lol he was a funny little guy, and his name was Mr. Fleabaggs. I called him Flea. yeah....a stupid name for sure. :) he wasn't neutered, but I never had issues with him wanting to wander or be too friendly. that wirey wild hair needed groomed alot, but little dogs are easy to bathe.

Oh yeah, my dog dug her way out of our property one night. She was lost for about 12 hours until someone contacted us from seeing the posters. She was lucky nothing bad happened!
