What is your system?

What do you use to partition off rooms??

Im trying to realistic with us now keeping Mitzu and her being a pitbull cross that if she does live longer than expected C&R might be in our future.

Thanks Friends :)

I think it would depend on number of dogs that need to be kept apart. We just make sure there are crates near where the people chill (so even crated dogs are 'with' their humans). And then take turns. We also have a fenced in dog yard, so in good weather instead of being in a crate the dog can be outside (with friends)

It depends a bit on the situation. When I had a girl who would have seriously fought with other girls in the house, it required much stricter management than dogs who will get into a scuffle in certain circumstances. For the former, we always had at least two barriers between her and the other girls. That meant for a C&R failure to occur, at least two things had to go wrong. Usually there was a baby gate at the top of the steps and a door at the bottom. It could be though a crate, door and babygate or any other combination. But for safety sake, there had to be at least two barriers and one of those two barriers had to be something pretty solid (pretty much a door). She would violently fight with the other girls when given a chance and it was dangerous to her, them and us.

OTOH I had two girls who would get into superficial scuffles in the house when they got into each others space. All that was required there when someone was home was a baby gate in the hallway to keep them out of each other's way.

First off, thank you for understanding that as a pit bull mix, your dog might develop dog aggression :)

When I had dogs that needed to be crated/rotated, was the same time I had a dog room. So there was a door separating the crates and loose dog/s. I would rotate every two hours or less. I also had partitioned yards and chain spots, so dogs could all be outside in good weather and still be apart from other dogs.

Right now I only separated when I am gone. I do this with doors, crates, and tie outs.

Previously I rotated with outside kennels, tie outs, and inside crates as well as tall stair gates.

I hated serious rotation so I am as dedicated as I can be to make it work with tolerance while supervised and limitations with high value objects.

You may never need serious C/R but it is good you're thinking ahead. If I were you I would get some stair gates and partition off your house now. The beauty of this is she's small and young and can learn to respect these boundaries now making life easier later should you need to rely on them.

We have a crate in the living room and a crate in the kitchen (under the table). When we're in C&R mode they get about two hours in the crate and two hours out. If it's nice out one of the girls will go outside with Murph for as long as they want (when we're home) and the other one hangs out inside.

I'd prefer both crates to be in the living room but since they think it's fun to have crate fights when something exciting happens it's not really an option. We also have fence/baby gate fights so we are not able to separate that way - unless we have two baby gates up. If I had to do things all over again I would 1) have gone to a behaviorist IMMEDIATELY, at the first sign that something wasn't right and 2) never ever ever have let them practice barrier aggression. Seriously, the barrier aggression is a huge PITA. It raises stress levels like crazy and every time it gets practiced the behavior gets a million times stronger (for my dogs anyway).

With your dogs I would be cautious about using baby gates only (should you end up C&R). I think Mitzu can probably go through one now pretty easily and I seriously doubt one would stop Teagan if she really wanted through.

And, since I was gone for a week and haven't said this yet, CONGRATS on your new addition and I think it's absolutely great that you rescued that adorable little girl and are doing so much to make her life better. You are awesome.

Baby gates do nothing in my house to stop dogs. As soon as the JRTs are 4-6 months they are up and over. The whippets don't even think and just stride over. We do have one to encourage dogs not to go in the living room at times, or conversly the kitchen.. but it doesn't even slow them down if they want on the other side.

IME this depends on the dog and their upbringing to some degree.

Most of my Belgians are pretty respectful of the idea of a barrier. Whimsy jumps into the hallway from the living room because she is sometimes confined there but she never, ever jumps from the hallway into the living room because..well you're just not allowed to do that! Savvy OTOH has no concept of barriers at all and hasn't since I brought him home at 12 weeks old. None of them will jump over the baby gate down the steps...well Savvy might I guess but he won't have a chance to see.
