After a wonderful weekend at the cottage, I noticed that my dogs gait was off this morning.

Upon closer inspection I realized that the skin between his pads and his nails is bright red and a little scaly. I think that his paws got burnt on the hot sand over the weekend. :(

What would you recommend I put on his feet to help soothe and heal the burn? I was thinking Polysporin Burn, because that’s what I’ve used on myself – but is it safe for dogs?

Also, is there a balm I can apply to keep this from happening again?

Thank you!!

Any Vitamin E cream would be good to sooth the paws but you may want to use a cone (you can even make one) to stop him from licking his paws. Licking is going to irritate it, sadly. Hopefully he's feeling better soon!

I haven't used it myself for summera lot but MushersSecret advertises it'self as a wax that will protect the dogs pads-

Mushers protects from hot pavement
and sand as well as any
irritants your pet may walk through.
We have many customers
in Arizona and California.
Anyways, I've used it a few times in summer for biking and Kaylee never got her pads burned but she also mainly stays on the grass so I can't say one way or the other if it works. But I do use it in winter and have been impressed with the results

Thanks for your help!! I will definitely pick up some of that “Mushers Secretâ€. I will see if they can ship it to me, it sounds like exactly what I am looking for.

What about Aloe Vera? I find Vitamin E very hard to spread and my dog has a ton of hair in between his toes so I think it will be hard to get it through the hair to the actual skin.

Thoughts? Thanks again!!!

Corona ointment is my favorite. It has antiseptic benefits as well as soothing and protective.

It's sold for horses, but the label also says it can be used on dog's pads and I've used it before.

It can be a little messy, but totally worth it IMO.
