The deer flies are horrible this year. As soon as you step outside they are attacking you and they take nice big chunks out.
Last night Dallas got bit on his eyelid and it was red and swollen. They also like to attack Tynans ears a lot.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent these annoying bugs from biting the dogs? or is there anything I can do to bring the swelling and redness down?

A few suggestions from one of my dog groups:

The best thing I have found to keep flies and gnats away from my dogs' ears and faces is Neem Oil. Just a little bit on the nose strip up over the head and on the inside and outside of the ears will last a couple of days. I get my Neem Oil here ... The Best Organic Garden and Farm Supplies from Dirt Works. Your Home for Safe Natural Products for Land and Hearth. ... 32oz bottle will last years.

Try tea tree oil. It helps take off all the crusted
Blood on the ears and will help repel the
Flies as well. It has been working well for me
And the flies are a big problem here in OK.
You will need to apply two to three times a day

Desitin Diaper ointment also works...it also is has no teratogenic impact

Had a bad problem with bleeding ears from flies on a couple of my dogs. The flies bother some more than others, but I tried Swat, Desitin, neem oil, everything! It only alleviated the problem for short term, had to be retreated many times a day. Finally found a solution that solved the problem for me. Its called AluShield, an aluminum based spray that coats the wounds and adheres to the skin until it heals. I found that when I used it every couple of days until the wounds healed up the wounds disappeared completely after a few treatments. Forgot to mention, available at Jeffers (jefferspet.com) for about $12/ can. Great for any type of wound

My mom used to put Swat in her GSD's ears to protect them.

If you find anything let me know! They just attack Quinn's muzzle - a couple times now she's come in with blood all over her nose. Then they scab, and she gets itchy and scratches the scabs off and they bleed. One didn't heal up for weeks! I had no idea what to try, I knew she'd lick the Swat off.

Swat and Desitin are good repellents and should work. Also, bathe your dog more often in the summer time.
