I emailed a breeder because I want to start my search now even thought I dont plan on getting the puppy for at least 2 years. I emailed a respected breeder in the breed explaining my situation and why I want the breed etc. telling her I'm trying to find a breeder now so I have time to develop a decent relationship with them. She sent me back an email telling me to buy her book and read it? Is that normal??

Normal is well..never normal....was that th entire email? And did you look up the book? Does it seem like a book with good info or a sales pitch?

Not to have a book but to basically not say anything but that and telling you to read their website which to get an email address wouldnt you have already read it. I also told the breeder specifically that I have researched the breed read many books about them, many websites about them they are basically the only thing I look at online. And I have already read her book I think because the title sounds very familiar. It just struck me as odd that the first sentence was basically selling me her book.

Some claim if they write a book they dont want to give the goodies away for free.
Note not all who write books are good breeders...

It is good to get a head start I have some younger friends and people in the military that are not getting pups for years and I speak too a few times a year.

She should of invited you out to see the dogs and meet her.
Then if you get on a waiting list give you a FREE book.

My website is my book I expect people to at min read 10 reasons NOT to own a CAS before calling me so I can cut down on time spent on the tel with not serious inquiries.

Some send me LONG LONG emails and I rather talk to the person on the tel or meet them in person- Dont have much time for the net...

Did she offer any form of contact besides buy the book?

At least she emailed you back...there are a couple of breeders that I've emailed over the years for inquiries into later puppies and I've never heard back from them.

Here is the Email. I took all identifying info out tho.

Dear Breeze, if you wish to know the Fila Brasileiro better, please read my book . You may order it sending a money order or a check to
If you wish to start breeding Filas, you will need to start with a pair of show quality dogs, whose parents has been x-rayed and certified by OFA hip dysplasia free. The Fila Brasileiro is an unique breed, different from all others you know. Please also visit my site and www.filabrasilassn.com. The FBA distributes a quarterly
newsletter called The Fila Digest. You should join the club in order to receive it for free. It will be very useful to you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to enter in contact with me.

Sounds like a form letter to me. Email her back and ask a specific, pertinent question that would show you do have a pretty good idea about what you're talking about?

So this is kinda normal. Ive never bought from a breeder that i havent known basically my whole life.

Heres is the email I sent her.
Hi,
My name is Breeze and I’m looking for a breeder for my future Fila dog. I have admired Fila’s for around 4 years now trying to decide if they are for me. I have come to the conclusion that they are and want to screen potential breeders now even though I am not looking to purchase a puppy for a few years. I am currently 19 and I start college to get an A.S. in Vet. Technology. I first learned about Fila’s from a close friend 4 years ago. I saw my first Fila in person 3 years ago at a show and I knew they were perfect. I grew up with American Pit Bull Terriers and would like a dog with a close personality but without the overpopulation of bad breeders. I am looking for a working dog as I plan to start a ranch where I will be raising barrel racing horses and cattle. I also plan to start my own breeding program with my dog. I currently own a 4 year old Anatolian Shepard/ Treeing Walker Coonhound male that I adopted from the animal shelter. My family altogether owns 2 American Pit Bull Terriers (one 3 year old male and a 1 year old female). We also have a 4 year old female Saint Bernard that we adopted from a couple who were going to just drop her off somewhere. A havanese female that turns 2 this summer and a 6 year old Greyhound that we adopted from a rescue. I would like to get to know you and have a relationship with you long before I plan to buy a puppy. Thank you.

I am a good respectful well known breeder with over half million clicks on my site. I would never reply to anybody like that: Read My booK? How rude. I would fine another breeder our country are full of them, take time and research good ones with good warrantys, etc.

I have looked at another one that actually has the two lines together that I like but their email address wasnt working it sent the email back to me. I havent called yet because I just found them last night. But they are also in the same state as me. I jsut dont really wanna give up on them yet because their dogs to me are purely amazing.

Referring you to her book is fine, IMO. she probably has replied to requests for information on the breed often enough that she is tired of rewriting the same general info.

The reply does seem to me to address your query, she gives you advice for how to learn more about the breed and info about how to begin a breeding program.

Most of the breeders I've talked to don't reply beyond the specific questions I ask, as much of the info is on their website. The questions are usually to get more specific or to clarify things beyond what is on the site. Since you are allowing yourself a couple years of searching, I would send another email with more specific questions regarding her dogs.

I also would continue to search for other breeders. When I was mal shopping, I contacted about a half dozen breeders and looked into a lot more that I didn't contact. Part of my decision was based on the breeder, part of it was based on the bloodlines, much of it was based on referals from others who had gotten puppies from them, and those referals were from people I found independently, not the breeders list of people that they know will say good things.

Thank You
The one in FL is about 4 hours from me and the other one that I emailed is in a different state. I do like all but one dog in the kennels of the one in Fl and the only reason I dont like her is that she has a line in her I dont like 3 generations back which is kinda sad cuz shes got an excellent head. But other then that she has great lines in all her dogs. I would love to be able to mentor under her as much as I'm able to between work, school and a baby in Feb.

Depending on what you asked it seems like you got one of those automatic replies. :p If she doesn't have the time to address each individual and potential buyer I'd go somewhere else. Or you could email her back and say, "thank you for the offer of your book. However, I've ready xyz books and do (or do not) plan on breeding. Could you please inform me as to whether or not I could be put on a waiting list for one of your Filas. If so, I'd like to establish ongoing contact with you regarding your Filas. If not, can you refer me to another good quality, respectable and ethical breeder that will. Thank you.

See if you get the same email again. If so, move on. If not, start talking.

I don't think it's normal...but then again this breeder might send out an automatic mailer just to discourage those that have a passing interest in the breed. I agree with the poster that suggested sending a specific question to her.
