 Help! I wrote a few days ago mentioning that my 11 week old pup had had diarrhea since about the time I got him home. I had been feeding him Nutro for puppies since I brought him home.

It was suggested here that I should take a look at the Dog Food Forum and think about changing his diet, so I did. I considered both Candidae all stages and Innova for puppies. In the end I went with Innova. The first day I fed him half Nutro and half Innova. Diarrhea all day. Second day I fed him the same except at dinner I fed him half Innova and half white rice.

Well, I just came in, at 2am in the morning, after letting him out to the back yard where he had a BIG bowel movement which had blood in it! :yikes:

I don't know what to think!?!?! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Aussie Red, I am taking him to the vet this morning for his second set of shots so I will definitely be speaking with him regarding all this. On top of the diarrhea he threw up his breakfast this morning.:(

I feel so sad for him and frustrated with all this.

I can't remember if I responded to your posts before....or what advice you have received....(I don't have time to look)
It sounds as though your problem is not food related....
There are many things that can cause diarehea and blood in the stool....
parvo being one... but the dog would be sick also...
Is your pup having any other symptoms?
Has your pup been dewormed?
The thing that comes to the top of my head is hookworms.
Causes severe diareaha and blood too.

I think your best bet is to keep your dog on Innova and see a vet. Take a fecal sample with you.
You can simply treat hookworms at home with OTC meds, but since you are unsure... I would advice a vet visit. It could be a more serious problem than that.

How did the vet visit go? Did you get a diagnosis?
:)

Good visit at the vets...

Thanks everyone!

Julie thanks for asking. I took him to the vet and at first she said she was going to put off the vaccination but later saw he looked healthy enough and was not the picture of a sick puppy.

After showing her the picture of the bloody stool, she said the blood, was probably a sign of an irritated bowel. (yes I took a picture of the stool with my digital camera and toook it to the vet) She went ahead with the vaccine and gave me three little white pills to firm up the loose stool. She also told me to take a stool sample and bring it back to her so they could analize it to make sure nothing else developed since last time.

She said to keep on with the diet transition onto the Innova Puppy food.

The white pills have worked miracles. :) There's nothing like the beauty of a firm stool after a month of diarrhea. Hope it lasts.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I saw about four or five nearly whole cashews
in his poop late last night. Hence the irritated bowel? Probably!
I remember we had dropped a package and I guess we didn't pick them all up after all.

I doubt that these nuts would have caused any irritation to the bowel. Most bowel irritability is actually from the body itself, from a large amount of bacteria in the system or both.
Also, I would have to disagree about giving a pup with month long diarrhea a vaccination. And what vaccination was given? I'm assuming it was actually vaccinations (a combo) all in one shot. Sigh... At least the vet considered the health first, and I admit, I don't have the pup in front of me... but I would have said I'll come back later for the vaccination.
Overall I'm glad to hear that things have improved.

Here's some info on Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Some causes and some treatments. In my experience IBS is usually being caused by something bigger, like overall health of the animal and immune system. Good Luck.

I would ask for a more in depth fecal test if this bout of diarrhea occurs again and the pup has a great urgency to "go" outside.
Not a test the vet can perform in their own offices. But one they send off, usually to a laboratory. Usually takes 5-7 days to come back depending how many things they test for.

Chloe has Clostridium Perfringens and most likely will have the remainder of her life, she's now 6 months old. Most vets do NOT even think to test for this but most have seen it in their practices and treated it without even knowing it. My vet DID think to test for it. It is a toxin in the intestines. Most all dogs have some Clostridium in thier intestines but never show signs of it at all.

Chloe awakened me one morning at around 1:30am with a tremendious urgency to "GO" outside.........big loose bowel movement. Then again at 2:45am and then again at 3:50am ALL loose and/or watery stools with mucous and small amount of blood. She was a little more than 3 months old when this began. She has had bouts in October, November and December, so far none this month but January is not yet over.

This affliction is controlled with Viceton and Metronidazol. She used to take DHCL and it's not as effective as the Metornidazol.

You should get the stool sample to the vet ASAP and ask for a more in depth test to rule out any other underlying causes that the vet cannot possibly do in his office.
