Ive been looking at differnt breeds of dogs and I think I've made my decision. A boston terrier. They are so cute and I adore the black and white markings. I think I just have a thing for terriers. ^_^ My sister owns a pitty and 2 Bostons. Im guess im going to travel in her footsteps. They seem to do well and the size differnce dosent seem to effect them. Im sure I just need to watch them closely like with all dogs. I still need to do some more research on the breed though. And the only fault I dont like about them is their breathing problems and the fact the overheat easily because I like to take long walks with Yami. I guess since they are a small breed I could carry her lol ^_^ Who knows, maybe they make doggie papoos's.. heh, cute real cute.. j/k that would be interesting though...

If anyone has any suggestions or advice its all welcome. Or even another smaller breed to check out would be cool. ^_^

If you want to take them on walks don't get one. We took my frineds to the parade monday and she only gets a couple steps with a harness on and can't do it. Even the ones I see at shows don't seem to last long. Maybe you could find a line witout a smooshed face but it won't really be in the standerd then.

The other big problem with them seems to be seperation anxiety. I have seen so many with it.

they are cute little dogs,I jsut don't think they are the best for an active house.

Hm, this was a long time ago, but my grandma had a Boston and she was a very active dog. We played outside all day long, going for walks along the creek and whatnot. We took her to parks. She'd chase after a ball until I was tired. She didn't really have any breathing problems. Of course, her face wasn't really that "squashed". She lived well into her teens, and the only thing wrong with her was that she eventually got cataracts. But I don't know... Maybe she was a fluke, or maybe things have changed? :(

I disagree joce. My friend has a Boston and the dog gets several walks a day. She could go all day long, you just have to take breaks if they get tired, because you don't want them to get overheated.

But its hard to find a dog thats balanced. here they are jsut about as bad as an english bulldog.

I'd be very carefull getting a pup and making sure the parents can do everything you want the pup to do. Also remember they may be fine on any given day but the humidity goes up jsut a tiny bit and it changes everything. if you are looking for an older dog it will obviously be a lot easier because you'll see how the dog is built and if its ok going for longer walks or being out with a little heat. They are very hyper nutty little dogs and have tons of energy and in air conditioning seem to do great:p But outside can be a very diffrent story.

I'm not saying don't get the breed,I'm saying be very carefull in what specific line you go to. Its really hard because a lot of the properly bred dogs will not be abel to go on long walks or out in the summer all the time. the badly bred dogs may be able to breathe easier but they may have other issues. Its jsut a breed thats difficult to balance. My frined ended up getting hers in amish country:rolleyes: after being told its not a country dog by a couple breeders. you'll adjust and get to know what days are good days to walk them and what days are not.

Thanks for the advice everyone, maybe i will concider other breeds because i would feel badly if I didnt take both for walks, out to play ect... but I dont know, Id see what the parents were capable of and then decide if i did actually decide to get the breed.

thank everyone <33

The person two doors down has a boston. Vicious little thing, she is. But I'm pretty sure it's just the dog. The let her roam free (you can tell what kind of owners they are  ) Lol

But they are cuties! All of my breed books say good things about them :)

Hi, I'm new to the site and I don't know if anyone still reads this thread, but I have (or had until Friday) 4 Bostons. Love them! They don't have breathing problems, except they snore and when you get all four of them going, whew! what a racket! They love!!!! to walk. My rescue Boston, Buddy, died and it's questionable right now what he died from. I took him in to have him wormed on May 17, and the vet decided he had hemolytic anemia and put him on high dose prednisone. He died Friday at 5:30 pm. He was perfectly fine on the 17th. I think the prednisone killed him. They are the most wonderful companion dogs you could ever want. I highly recommend the BT!

I'm sorry about your loss . The only Boston I knew belonged to my FIL... caused 6 stitches in my daughter's arm. I'm glad there are so many terrier and small dog owners here as there are so many in rescue and the HS. Yhat leaves the larger breeds for me !!! Just kidding ... we're all needed !

The only Boston I have been around was a family friends and she seemed to be a little fiesty thing and she would run and run all die and never tire out I think they are a great breed and as far as breathing problems it can't be any worse than any of the other brachiochephalic breeds can it?

It's been my experience with Bostons that as long as they are used to the exercise, they're fine. You do have to be a little more cautious about hot and humid days, but otherwise they just go forever.
