Hello all,

In the past week, I've killed 3 black widow spiders around the house, and my question is, how harmful are they to small dogs? My wife was bitten a year ago, and it was pretty much like a real bad case of food poisoning, but she's a healthy 30 year old, and weighs just a little more than the min pins.

We do have an exterminator come out, but as far as the widows are concerned, he says our best bet is to kill them on sight, since most poisons are ineffective, and even the ones that are effective this week, won't be in a week or two.

We've put fencing around the bottom of our decks to keep the dogs out from under them, which is where the spiders normally hide.

I've done a bit of searching on the web, trying to find out how bad they are for dogs, but most sites generally just state their human problems, and it's basically that a healthy adult human will get sick, but it can be real bad for a child or elderly person.

Does anyone know if they're deadly to small dogs? I don't really worry about my Rottie, because he's not real thrilled with chasing bugs, and he's around 105 lbs, but the Min Pins chase anything they see, so they're the ones that will provoke the spider if they see one.

I've done a little research on that myself actually...from a few sites here and there I've read that they can be harmful to pets and possibly fatal to small dogs and cats...especially if not treated RIGHT AWAY. I'd surely keep on eye on the dogs!
