This is a spin-off of the forced sterlization thread...

For parents: Would you supply birth control (the pill, condoms, etc) for your teenage children, if they asked for it?

For teenagers: Would your parents give you birth control if you asked for it?

For me, if my daughter or son (I don't have any children...speaking in the hypothetical here) asked for the pill, condoms, whatever...yes, I would give it to them. Do I agree with them having sex? Probably not. But in my opinion, giving them birth control and teaching them how to use it is not giving them permisssion, and saying "Go ahead...go have sex...", it's like saying "If you're going to have sex, be smart about it...be safe."

Because if they ask for it...chances are they're already thinking about it...

Just my two cents.

ok, as a teen:
no, i wouldn't ask my Mom for birth control. (i'm on the pill but i'm not sexually active it's just for cramps). If i did become sexually active i'd buy condoms myself and probably not tell my mom i was having sex. (at this point, if i started having sex i might tell her because it would be with someone i loved and i'm definately mature enough to make that decision myself. but if i had started having sex at 15 or 16 like so many kids, no, i wouldn't tell her).

As far as providing birth control for my future kids, it totally depends. If my 17 year old daughter who had had a steady boyfriend for a number of months and was mature enough to talk to me about it in a responsible manner, yes i would. If my 15 year old suddenly started going to parties with her friends and asked if i'd buy her condoms then the answer would be absolutely not no way in hell. and she sure as hell wouldn't be going out to those parties anymore, lol.

My mom gave both my sister and I birth control when we asked for it. She never told us to be abstinent but she never told us to sleep around. But if we were going to have sex she wanted us to be safe. And taking birth control did not make me want to have sex more often. Like so many people think "Oh but if I give my daughter birth control thats saying go have sex!". Not so. When I asked for it I wanted it for anouther reason other than sex. The topic is really not taboo in my house.

Okay that was me babbling again.

Totally agreed.

I am on BC only to regulate my period cause it was CRAZY! On for 2 months, off for a week, on for a month, off for a month, you get the idea.
I didn't get it to help prevent a baby or anything like that. And i have a girlfriend on top of that, so if for someway she and I can get each other pregnant I don't need BC for pregnancy.

hehe Dakotah you guys would be a medical miracle =). I actually asked my dad for birth control when I was 21. My sister asked my mom, we just went to the parent were closer to. My parents know us, they know were going to be safe. But I actually scrapped the pill idea because I don't like the hormones. I'm getting an IUD soon.

We always kid around and say we'll end up getting each other pregnant and make millions of dollars for being the 1st 2 women to have a baby together. :D

I didn't even ask my mom... she asked ME. When I had gotten a consistent period and when I was in highschool my mom approached me and said "Would you like me to make a Dr;s appt for you and get you on the pill" and I said sure. I wasn't sexually active at that point... but it DID REALLY help regulate my period. I was never good at the "counting" to predict it so I would always get it at random times and it was embarrassing. With the pill I knew when it would be coming and could be fully prepared.

I suspect i will do the same with Hannah. I will do my best to teach her about sex and responsibility but I am a realist lol I know she may choose to have sex and I want to help her be prepared for whenever she makes the decision. Plus like me it really helps with regulating your period. So even sex aside I getting your period can sometimes be confusing and embarassing for a girl. PLUS it never hurts to get her used to a BC routine BEFORE she needs it.

My mom made my sister go on the pill when she was like 16. Not because my sister slept around or anything, but just...because I guess. I didn't involve myself in the conversation too much I just know that my mom strongly urged my sister to begin on the pill.

I've no idea and don't plan to find out. I can buy them at a drug store (hell I can buy them at a convenience store right here on campus!) and would feel weird getting them from my parents.

LOL, that always made me laugh. You can buy condoms at the C-store on northside, yet they never seemed to have any tampons when I needed them. >.<

I'm thinking about talking to my mother about the pill but not for birth control reasons. Blegh, girl stuff is no fun.

Laurelin thats any college campus. There was literally a bowl of different varieties of condoms outside my RA's door. But to get tampons I'd have to walk to the student store that was 2 miles away. There should be equal distribution =P

I never asked either of my parents for Birth control. My mom would have flipped and yelled at me. And my dad was clueless to that kind of stuff. My grandma is really old fashioned too.

My boyfriend just bought condoms. I never felt like I could talk to anyone about that kind of stuff. So for my daughter, I'm going to try to make is easy and comfortable for her to talk to me about that kind of thing. And hopefully she will come to me and ask for birth control rather than being scared and not coming to me at all. They are going to do it one way or another one day. Might as well make it safer for them if we can as parents. But teens must understand that having sex is a big responsibility. A teacher is school told us that if we were not ready to have kids, don't have sex. Because with sex comes the risk of children. and you should be ready for kids when you decide to hve sex that way if by surprise you get a surprise, you'll be ready. Birht control doesn't always work.

They had them last night. I'm buying my chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream for a midnight snack and sitting on the counter are like 5 boxes of them.

Later on I found out that our roof was leaking in our bathroom from the people upstairs and wished I had bought some.

In the UK contraception is available to teenagers without parents consent or knowledge. But that doesn't stop us still having one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates!

Now THAT I don't agree with. I'm never planning on having children. I don't like children, and I don't ever feel the need to have any. Am I never going to have sex? Of course not.

No...but there are methods of ending an unwanted pregnancy...

Yes. My parents would. My mother certainly would NOT approve of me having sex before marriage, and my dad doesn't want me to have sex till I'm 30, but I know they'd go ahead and do the safe thing. (Actually, I think I'll ask them later.. give them a scare and tell you all how the conversation went. LMAO.)

Me, as a parent.. well I'm not going to be, but since this is mostly hypothetical for some of us yep. I'd get 'em the birth control.

Then I'd do my damndest to make sure they DIDN'T have sex. :D

That I will not get into.

I did not say if you don't want kids you should never have sex. Unless you have a full proof way of not to get pregnant it is always a possibility it can happen.

Yes I would, and Yes I WILL.

I don't care if I have to fight with Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, and anyone else who feels it's their business. I want my kids to be able to talk to me about ANYTHING, and I want them to be safe and protected FROM anything I have to power to protect them from.

I have offered to pick my son up some condoms, and I came right out in front of his girlfriend about doing it SAFELY. They both turned red in the face, but it had to be said, LOL. Of course I made jokes about NOT doing it in MY bed, MY pool, or MY house period...........that lightened the mood a little :D
