No mater what the pet store guy tells you, DO NOT GET A SUN CONURE

i have heard of bird store owners calling them "quiet as long as they are stimulated" or something and encouraging people to buy them. and charmed by THEIR beautiful looks, people do.

but plain and simple, sun conures are LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD lol

It does make sense Romy about the lovebirds. The only ones Ive had contact with where my friends when she stayed here and they where a pair. I can see them becoming quite loud alone.

Agreed Fran, my neighbor had a Sun and he was louder than both my sennies together. They also seem to be a bit needy like a Grey or Too. Most of the conures are loud birds even the quieter ones are still quite loud.
Depending on the size the OP is looking at. I would go with Budgies(sm), cockatiels(med) and sennies(lg). There is also a couple of other African parrots that are pretty nice birds too. I also recomend finding a breeder instead of visiting a petstore. Most petstores have no clue as to owning a bird. And usually price their birds higher than a breeder. And most of the birds are not hand-tame (atleast here they are not), where as a breeder will have hand-tame/handfed. Although with Sennies, you may have to wait as they are not as prolific as cockatiels and budgies(read they are the bunnies of the bird world).

I had parakeets and canaries when I was a kid all the way till I was married. Mostly parakeets and they were great. They were a little on the squawky side at times...when I'd run the vaccum cleaner or some other loud noise was happening or if two people in the household were arguing a little loudly, they'd often go on a rampage with loud squawking. They're sensative that way. But most of the time, they'd just sort of chirp and make warbly sounds. They're very easy to tame, very interested in interacting with you and lots of fun.

One thing to be extra careful about is that if you don't keep the wings clipped so they can fly a bit in the house, make sure no one opens a door to the outside. I lost a bird or two that way and apparently they don't have much of a sense of direction and it's extremely difficult to get them back. But I had so much fun with mine.

My mom and I would be doing the dishes and would leave the cage door open for a time and the bird would fly over to my shoulder, hop down my arm and ask to have a bath under the running water and in my cupped hands. Soooooo cute and as he would scrinch down low and wiggle around in my hands, it felt so soft. :)

Once or twice throughout my life, I had two at a time. But normally, one was tamed already and as long as I worked with both, they stayed tame to me. I tried to breed a pair. My dad made a breeding box according to specs, but alas...they were too tamed to me and weren't that into each other. So, I bagged the idea. I loved my canaries too....not the type to tame or train, but they sang beautifully. The canaries were a thousand times messier than the parakeets. LOL. But both will molt and make a mess...feathers all over. The canaries though, tend to scatter the seed and gravel out of the cage more. But they're at least smaller messes than those bigger birds. Whatever bird you decide on after checking things out, have fun! enjoy!

I think the three that I'm going to look into are doves, budgies/parakeets, and cockatiels. I found some of all of those on Petfinder, and have emailed them, asking some general questions about personality, etc.

I found one dove that would be perfect for me, but they have a contract where they won't allow you to house them with other birds of the opposite sex, because of breeding. And I made the mistake of mentioning that I would most likely at some point get another one, as a lot of doves do better with a friend. They said no, because they can't control whether or not I would be producing more doves. *rolls eyes*

I EVEN mentioned in my original email that I've worked for a rescue for the past three years handling dogs and cats. You would think that they would think I would be familiar with the whole "pet overpopulation" concept. *rolls eyes*

a linny parakeet might be absolutly perfect for you too, dont forget to look into them :) beyond the budgies most parakeet species get overlooked, and its ashame because they make awesome pets!

My family had a cockatiel and I loved her. We all did, really. She was such a sweetie. She'd sit on my shoulder and she looved to be petted (especially around her neck -- she'd make cute little noises). She also liked jewelry. :) We were all really sad when she died.

[Be sure to check and double check for ceiling fans if/when you let your bird fly. It seems obvious but it was a mistake that was made in my house and we felt terrible (bird was fine, thankfully).]

i just wanted to add my parrolett is a screamer x.x you can read where it says they can't get as loud as the bigger birds and they can't but it's not a quiet scream if he wants something.

i really liked my cockatiel he was hand tame when i got him LOVED riding on shoulders and would roll his head to the side when he saw people so they would scratch him. he had a ton of out of cage time but mostly just stayed on my shoulder, got pets, sat on the trash can. *i teach my birds to perch with their butt over the trash can so they can stay out of the cage longer while still being by me and getting attention. XD
