This morning I heard Midnite barking outside- the high pitch bark she uses when she wants to come in, but she was not near the door. I put my shoes on and went out to find her in case she was stuck or something. I found her under the pool deck, with a bird she had cornered and had already messed up a good bit, to the point that it wasn't going to live. I've never seen her so focused on something- she is a Golden/GSD cross who has NEVER had any kind of prey drive, (would never fetch or play with toys at all) yet she was fascinated with this bird. I have no idea how she caught it, it was an adult bird, and it's mate was squawking in the tree above her. Another interesting point- Gunnar had no interest in it at all. He was more interested in what Midnite was doing. He'd sniff the bird but didn't go after it like Midnite did. The bird sorta scooted away but I doubt it lived, Midnite had bitten it pretty hard a few times.

Buddy has just recently shown an interest in birds. I wonder what they're thinking when they see this thing that is the size of a squeeky toy and is flappin around.. lol.....

I think the bird escaped. She had followed it into some bushes, and a while later I saw her watching it as it had gone up into a bush out of her reach. Later on I saw it jump down and go out of the fence. I think it as an adult sized chick, as the bird that I thought was the mate brought it a little berry to eat. All of it's tail feathers were gone. Hopefully it lives. I was just amazed that Midnite even had that in her, based on her lack of reaction to things like squirrels, toys, cats, etc.

Unfortunately, I have more trouble with the dogs catching birds than the barncats... Abbey is particularly fast when it comes to snatching birds out of the air. (A bluejay tried to divebomb her, and that fast, she grabbed it.) :(

Well thats a good thing for a bird dog! :D
I still see no problem with it anyways. Its natural for alot of dogs to have a drive for prey. Not much you can do after the first bird anyways. Its so much fun for the dog its a hard habit to break.

I realize that.
And I hope the bird is okay. I may seem touchy, and I apologise. It's just that I have been really depressed because a bird (fledgling) died in my care yesterday.

Lena`s killed 2 crows because she has a very high prey drive but mostly because they were dive bombing her when she was trying to take a dump. The rest of the crows went bezerk when they seen this and launched an arial assault on Lena who fled back to the house.
