My family just recently moved to a new neighborhood that's kindof country-esque. Its not quite out in the boonies, but close to it. There are two neighbors around here that think its ok to let their dogs roam. One of them is a cute, tan and white female pit bull. She is dog friendly, people friendly, and cat friendly. However, she likes to go where she shouldn't, like my garage! I had to grab her butt and shove her out of my garage on Sunday so that my mom could put the door down to keep her out. We had our dogs out for a walk and she tried to follow us back into the house, which Daisy (my lab mix) did NOT like whatsoever! At least the pit bull only seems to come over on weekends.

The other dog is an older, female boxer named Foxy. She roams around every morning/early afternoon. I had my dogs out for a walk at 8:00 this morning so they could use the bathroom and Foxy comes over to us to see my dogs. At first they are all just sniffing, then all of a sudden Foxy tries to start something, there is growling and a fight ensues. I put my foot in between Daisy and Foxy and break it up while yelling "Get away from my dogs!!" I don't need my dogs getting attacked!

In my old neighborhood, dogs were never outside without owners present. These two dogs never have owners anywhere in sight! The only reason I know Foxy's name is because there were some kids at the bus stop this morning yelling "Foxy!" Neither dog has tags, Foxy has a choke chain and the pit bull has no collar at all. I don't know if those kids just know Foxy or if she is their dog, but I think I know what house she lives in. As for the pit bull, I only know which direction she comes from, and that she found some way through a barbed wire fence.

These loose dogs get on my nerves, and they worry me because my dad had an electric fence installed which we are currently training our dogs to, and I don't want to leave them outside all day like my dad would like to once they are trained to the electric fence because I don't want to come home to chewed up dogs. (Although, I think Foxy is more likely to hurt my dogs than the pit bull, the pit is almost TOO friendly!).

Its just not safe for those stupid owners to let their dogs roam. Foxy tried to get hit by the school bus this morning.

Do people in the country just care less, or what??
I may be printing out some stuff about LEASH LAWS for Foxy's owner!

id print out a copy of the leash laws for your county and post them around first, that way they cant claim they didnt know, give it a day or 2 after dropping off the information then if you can get a video camera or even regular camera, get proof of these dogs both wandering through the neighbourhood, then call animal control.
on a first offence the owners will usually ahve to pay to get them out and that might be enough to get them to keep their dogs under control.

Yeah, my sister-in-law and her family let their dog out without a leash, and they know that he goes roaming around the neighborhood checking in with the neighbors. They talk about it like it's cute, and I know they love their dog, but I just think it is a really bad idea. I'm sure some of the neighbors don't like it. Plus, it's just unsafe! I can't say anything, though, because I am always walking a fine line between sounding concerned and sounding like a know-it-all. I'm from the city, and these folks are country people. They would never listen to me about it anyway.

i'd be on the phone with animal control pretty soon, especially with the fighting. it is not acceptable to allow dog-aggressive dogs (or any dogs, really) to roam. and i would totally not be letting your dogs out unsupervised any time soon.

I would also definitely call animal control ASAP. In fact, I would call them when I see the dogs roaming. That way, they can just pick them up and their owners can get a good lesson. If you have to have words with them, fine. It's better than rearranging your own PRIVATE property or not being able to let your dogs be on their own land because you have to worry about somebody else's dogs endangering yours. This situation won't be a problem for them unless you make it one. But it will continue to be a problem for you. So I say nip it in the bud. It sure worked fast for one of my neighbors. lol.

Rachel, I'm with you. I do NOT appreciate it if my neighbor's dog shows up in my yard, especially when my dog is out there. I keep my dog leashed when she walks in the neighborhood and confined to her own property the rest of the time. I expect the same from others. Hopefully, your sister in law won't learn something the hard way one day, country-folk or not.

ohhhh can I go on about roaming dogs...that's how i ended up with my brood with a stray digging under my fence...I live in a country area and there is tons of strays..and they are quicker to come tell you to have your dogs stop barking then to do anything about dogs roaming the streets turning trash cans over...also during hunting season..there will be poor half starved hunting dogs roaming around..it always breaks my heart
