Thank you Angel for the warning. How sad. The cages' major design flaw probably due to cutting costs should be trashed, as should every cage constructed that poorly. When I buy a new kennel I check for stability and safety. Your post will remind me to be ever cautious. Again, thank you.

I sent the manufacturer an email and told them they should take it off the market... Maybe if they get a few hundred emails they will do something about it. ( probably made in china anyway)

I'm slowly deciding that wire crates in general aren't all that safe. I know that for my dogs, they'll have a VariKennel only. Too many of my clients have told me stories of how their dogs have chewed out of a wire crate, or torn up their feet pawing at the bars, etc. Sawyer showed me a number of times that he could get out of his wire crate and it scared me to death once I thought about it...I mean, I used to leave his collar on at the same time...it's by the grace of God that I didn't come home to suffocated Aussie. Now he's both naked and loose in the house, since he's proved himself trustworthy and I've learned more about collars.

varikennels have wire doors, though. i find it kinda disturbing that the dogs are so stressed in the crates that they're pawing the bars to the point of harming themselves.

We've been thinking about this type of crate for agility when we are in the barn for ease of transportation. Will definitely think this over again! They wouldn't be left unattended in them in our case though.

I have that crate. It's made by midwest though, and sold at petsmart. Cider did paw like mad in a vari kennel, and calmed down in buying that wire crate so she could see. I know numerous people with them that haven't had an issue. *shrug*

I have that crate for Magnus. I've never had any problems with it. No collapsing problems or anything. The one thing I do not like is that if he pushes on the door hard enough with his paw he can fit his paw in there. The other night he did pinch his foot. Thankfully we were on our way to let him out.

Those stories are horrible. I am thinking I may try a varikennel. My only problem with plastic crates are that Magnus can chew through them.

If I bought a product like that and I still had the bill of sale, I would bring it right back to Walmart and demand a full refund.

I have the Midwest brand, but it's the same type of crate. Good thing to look out for.

My dogs don't paw frantically at their crates, thank god.

Our boys have these crates- never had a problem with them.

My concern is why is the pup so desperate to get out? Are they stuck in there for 8 hrs/day with NO stimulation? Do they have water, toys, bedding to make it comfortable?

Is it an 8 week old pup being "housetrained"? Is it a three month pup being left by itself for 8 or 9 hours/day?

It could very well be the result of poor training and abuse of the crate. As I've said before, our boys love their crates, but they also aren't in them for 8 hrs/day.

i find it kinda disturbing that the dogs are so stressed in the crates that they're pawing the bars to the point of harming themselves.
My thoughts exactly... ^^

I had a pup go to a new home that had this type of crate--- Midwest . he'd only had the puppy 5 days and found the poor pup had hung himself . After that I warned everyone to add wires to the top to secure . Crates in those days did not have enough clips . The puppy had reached up high enough to wedge open the top with his head ...

All those comments are from 2004. I wonder if they've already taken this crate off the market.

I use wire crates because I have to. I drive a Saturn, and there's no way a fiberglass crate will fit, so we go with folding wire crates for the trunk. It helps that my dog isn't aggressive or destructive in her crate. I'd probably avoid them if that were the case. Ironically, 2 of my 3 fiberglass crates are damaged, and my wire crates are still fine (some of the bars a bit bent, but for having been lugged around to shows for the past 2-3 years, not bad at all).

I looked at their web site and Walmart's and didn't see that crate listed.

Well a friend passed this to me, and I wanted to pass it to y'all.

I didn't see any dates though...
