I'm not worried about someone being bitten in a break-in. If they break in they deserve to be bitten. And IMO, just walking into someone's (locked, I'm assuming) yard is breaking in.

I would likely have a bell outside my gate with a sign advising people that dogs are on the premisis, and to please ring the bell. I wouldn't want people coming in and out of my yard if I left my dogs in there.

I have a "Dogs on Premises" sign. Just so people don't decide to walk into my yard (like the gas meter reading guy) without asking first. Sometimes the dogs and I are hanging out in the yard, but not necessarily from the front could you see that, and it would not be good news for some idiot to just walk in. Not sure if they'd do anything but charge the intruder and bark, but still. I don't really want to find out.

I don't like anything that implies my dogs are dangerous. I just like people to know that dogs do live here, so be smart. I never really thought of Amber's train of thought before though... I'd hate for somebody to come prepared to hurt them because they know they're there. But I think even without signs it's pretty easy to tell that we have dogs. You can see the dog run, toys in the yard, etc.

I just have a "Caution:Dog on Premises" sign. Serves the purpose of warning people that there are dogs here. I have a couple funny GSD guard ones that I have hung up in the house.

Nope.

If you're hoping to limit liability, or avoid it altogether, you need to put up a "NO TRESPASSING" sign.

It has been proven, that in our screwed up judicial system, that "Beware of Dog" signs can indicate that you knew your dog was aggressive/vicious before an incident occurred, thus turning the tables on you regardless of the situation.

Years ago I had a Beware of Dog sign up in my window - yes, I knew my dog was not friendly with strangers and my thoughts were to protect us both, but also to warn emergency workers should something happen and I was not able to tell them he wasn't friendly.

My homeowners insurance cancelled me because of it. So, no more signs.

I do love the more clever ones though!! :)

I wouldn't put one up because the dogs get the message across just as much as a sign; we have a chain link fence and you can clearly see Schaffer in the yard. Cross into it and he'll bark like hell.

I think there are a few "I can make it to the fence in 2 seconds... Can you?" things throughout the neighborhood. Not sure how much it helps because one of said people did have a break-in. Then again, someone broke into the chief of police's home. lol
