I actually just use a pair of human toenail clippers on Meg now. I feel like I can get a much better feel for where I'm actually cutting, versus with the dog clippers. I'm not sure if they would work on such a big dog, though - they may not open wide enough.
Gusto has made it clear he prefers the dremel. So do I actually, but Meg doesn't love it, and I'm not going to worry about it. Her nails are easy to keep under control with the clippers, and she barely wakes up for those.
This is the general diagram I've seen everywhere showing the angle to clip.
I err on the side of taking less, but clipping more frequently.
