To me good temperment is better. Most strangers are afraid of Chip. His bark and size are bigger than his bite. Think of your home insurace going up too.

Why are you looking for a guard dog?

All dogs have the ability to warn off intruders and guard their property..even my chihuahua will create a ruckus...

I for one, am not very fond of people keeping "guard dogs"...there are some businesses around here..including car dealerships, that keep guard dogs..usually german sheps...the dogs are basically chained until night time when the place closes, and then set free to roam the yard...I don't think they've ever been properly socialized, taken home, or taken out for a walk..they just live in the yard 24/7..

Other people chain their dogs in the backyard and use them as "guard dogs"..these dogs are usually unsocialized, often neglected, and have a tendency to become aggressive due to the above...

Ask yourself why you're looking for a dog..if you want something to protect your property and nothing more, then get an alarm system..its probably more effective anyways...

Just remember that dogs should be family members and companions first and foremost...

Thanx

I 100% agree with PitBulliest. As far as I am concerned, I am not trying to tell what you should do. But a "guard dog" is a liability if you are not 100% in control.
Good luck

Are you wondering about a dogs natural instinct to protect you, or a trained guard dog?

I think any dog that loves you, and is well taken care of will do its best to protect you should the situation arise. Even Maggie will bark if she thinks something wrong.

Hey I understand everything you guys are saying. and no I'm not going to just tie him up in the yard and never bother with him. i plan on training and socialize him and spending quality time with him. I'm also looking for a companion dog for my kids but the fact is I can't go buy a lab, because we live in a ruff area and there is a higher crime rate now in london than ever before. So I would feel better knowing there is a GSD Or a rottweiler in my house in the event something happened.

I need a dog with natural guarding abilites.

Just remember that if someone comes into your house with a gun..they'll probably shoot your dog anyways...

If you want a dog used for guarding, you need to know that you are responsible for that dog, as well as that dog's actions..
Because dumb-ass people trained pit bulls to be aggressive for their own stupid reasons...because they thought it was an extention of their balls so to speak...the breed ended up suffering because of irresponsible owners wanting rough and tough animals...

I understand what you are saying..but also understand that you will have to do alot of research on these breeds..they are not just dogs for everyone and anyone..they require alot of training, alot of socialization, and of course..love and care...

They can be some of the biggest sweethearts, but they need responsible owners that know what they are getting into.

Well, how experienced are you with owning a dog? The more protective breeds usually need someone with years of experienced dog ownership. they do have different personallities than many other breeds. While my Rottie and Fila are extremely loving, loyal, affectionate and great with kids. It doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lot of training, patience and socialization on your part. If you do not socialize(and I stress a lot) a protective breed dog you will be living with a time bomb, so to speak. If you are living in a rough neighborhood I can't say I blame you for wanting a watch dog. Unless you have many years of protective dogs please don't even consider a fila.
Sometimes just having a large dog can run off unwanted guests. If you like large dogs I might suggest and old english mastiff. Big, intimidating, very loving, pussycat, Or even a greatdane. Big and intimidating. Wonderful dogs, I have had two. But you still need to socialize. They can be overly protective if you don't, and could mis-interpret a friendly situation, and bite. You don't want a dog that could be so protective it will bite your kids friends. That can happen with certain breeds. Maybe if you made another post and explained your situation in a little more detail. Possibly what breed for me? You will certainly get many more post without some of the heat you have been receving. Let us know how much experience you have with dogs in the past. This will give us a better clue as to a dog that might fit in your lifestyle.
Just trying to help :)
You might want to invest in a gun also. I have a pretty little 9m I keep by my bed when hubby is out of town. And, I live in a good neighborhood.:D

Rotties are wonderful natural guardians. However,IMO, the german bloodlines need an experienced owner. They can be quite "testy" if not trained and socialized properly. If you are considering a rottie. I suggest you pm redyre. a breeder and show person. I am sure you can get much insight on the rottie breed. I personally adore mine. She is perfect, but... She has is very well trained and is a house dog. I believe that makes a major difference in any breed. Rotties love to be with you. They are somewhat of a velcro dog. They have a huge heart and will love you unconditionally. Roxie would give her life for us...However, she is like my child and I could not let that happen. I would do whatever I could to protect her and Brutus both. If you are considering a German Shepard pm Richie. He can tell you some of the trials and tribulations as a first time owner of a german shepard. Everyone here will do their best to help you. We are a very passionate about our dogs. We hate to see them abused, unloved, and basically thrown in the yard to fend of themselves. So please don't go away and think everyone is against you. We're not, it was just the title of your first post. OMG that first post is always the hardest.
Please understand, many of us that do own protective breeds are up against bsl. Our breeds are being banned and killed because of irresponsible owners and breeders. So, forgive us if we are a little testy at times. Maybe we are like our dogs. lol We don't want to see a protective breed fall into irresponsible hands. The dog is the one that suffers, not the owner.

Same goes for German shepherds. Excellent, excellent guard dogs but it's best, if you want one, to get from German working lines. And that requires a very experienced owner. Or one that is extremely dedicated.

I agree with all the posts. But, why have a dog for a small chance of a break-in , for about 14 years of owning a dog ???? Yes, get a Rottie or a GS, but mainly as a loving house dog. I agree, anyone who wants to break into your home will kill your dog in a heart break. If someone tries to break in here, Chip will bark like mad.... If I had a Rottie or a GS ,they'd bark their heads off. Regardless of the bark ... if they want to come in, they will and the dog would be dead. If they hear the barks and leave , it's not the breed but the bark.

I believe your best protection is yourself.... As for dogs, I have trained all types of breeds and mutts to be protective. No, I won't take all the credit, because if you bond with your dog and provide for him/her, then most likely than not, that dog is going to protect his/her territory and your family. Stats. show that if an intuder even thinks there is ANY type of dog in the house, the intruder will seek other places.
I for one, trained my boxer to be protective and guard me, most which came natural, but I had to travel a lot and I trained him to protect my car, since I had to sleep sometimes in hotel parking lots. NO ONE.... even my family, could not approach the car while he and I was in it with out him "going off." I also trained him in physical attack....
Bottom line, you just need a good dog that you love and loves you even more. I also have a gun that has been transported over state lines... and I have it in my closet now.
So, if you really want a feeling of protection, take self defence, lock up your house, have a good dog inside, maybe a weapon, an alarm system and common sense.
I can't specify a breed, because I know of several pit bulls, rotts, german shep, that will allow anyone in the house, that's not always the answer. So don't think in terms of "scary breeds" esp. if you don't know their behavior. Good luck. Also, why are you so interesed in a guard dog? My blue and gold macaw parrot is also very mean and protects me like I am her "bit*h." lol No, she really does.

Don't overlook the value of a good guard dog, the dog alerts the owner to danger. You then can grab your gun or whatever you have to protect yourself. So it will help if your dog has a hold of him, it obviously slows down the criminal ....Dont underestimate the will of a dog to protect his family, he's not just going let someone kill him easily ...A alarm is first line of defense, dog is second and myself the alpha male will be last but not least with my 40 cal.;)

For starters any dog that has vocal cords is the best watch dog. A burgler etc is not going to break into a home where there is something that is going to set off either an alarm or a barking dog. Police can be called with warning, and everyone knows that any dog can give warning of any person walking in the yard.

The best guard dog I ever had was a border collie. When I lived in a sub division my Shepherd and Shepherd/Husky mix slept through while a person was breaking in next door...my border collie was freaking out barking we called the police as my father knew the neighbors were away and caught the paper boy and a few friends taking items out of the house.

When people are selecting homes to break into they take into account if they have dogs/alarm system.

Keep in mind we live in a sue happy world, having a dog that may attack perhaps an innocent child going through your back yard etc.

Grab your gun..it will help if your dog has a hold of him....oh my...very very scary. This is the talk of a bad dog owner, that person taking a short cut through this yard could be a child. And we wonder why we have such problems with dog attacks etc. A dog should never physically touch a person....ever. A barking dog is just as good an alarm system. Then you call the police, not your gun...lock your doors etc. If I lived next door to someone who would shoot at person and boast they have a dog that will attack I would be reporting that owner so fast it would make their head spin.

Best natural guard dog if well handled in my opinion, I would have to say a Belgian Malinois

Best Trained guard dog depends on training quality, any dog can be a very good guard dog if trained well and properly.

Everything needs to be trained and applied very carefully and thouroughy, Nothing should be left not understood, very clearly. The obedience level MUST be paramount or the dog cannot be trained to do any aggressive style of training.

However any dog is a liability, so you must know how to handle, train and contain it, remember a dog is a large amount of potential and if you dont know how to use that potential it can be a danger to you and the public.

And remember A dog MUST know how to handle situations and know when it is essential to be protective and when not to, this is what classes and very specific and careful training are for.
