We train the dog

The dog was fine around me and my dad but had no respect for the rest of my family we let it see the ctas in the cage and the whole family saw to dog at once. We had a behaviorlist try and train it bought it to puppy school had me and my dad in the house training it(ive trained around4 dogs and hes trained around 10) and the dog still bite and attack the cats even though we would let it see the cats it would growl at em. They did that no say anything just give us dog and tell us the dogs fine so we take it we just thought thats how all american pounds were. We bring it to dif shelter cuz old owner bring in new dog then leave then they just gave it to us no questions asked all they said baby was allergic to dog and that it was goldne german shepard so what else do you have wanted me to do with the dog we had it for four motnhs still attacked half the family and some strangers. I'm 20 you people are to idealistic or just dont believe me idk but i swear to god and on any1s grave they gave us dog like 5 minutes after it just came in brand new i dont know what else to tell you.

I dont know where you live, but dogs usually are held for at least 3 days for they are put up for adoption at most animal controls (pounds)

I am doing reaserch we out of all the dogs my family had that was a rude awakening and the 1st one we had to return(were talking like outta all my family about 20 dogs that worked out fine all dif breeds) but my god that site u sent me's ridiculous they make every dog sound horrible.
I know all dogs can bite but I think a ridge back and rottweiler are more likely then a golden that kinda thing. We dont want a golden cause we want something smaller and cheaper our golden had soem skin problems tons of sheding and died at ten which is what most goldens live to but 2 short.
Not to mention ur putting this of on me like its my fault we got an aggressive dog we were completely lied to about.
You said it was a puppy. Puppies bite and jump on people when they airn't trained properly. Little dogs can and will attack too. Actually little dogs tend to have more of a temper then larger dogs. Just putting in my couple points here.

Ohhh

Its former owners must of trained it really poorly as a young puppy then.

There's your first mistake. You should have introduced everyone slowly...not all at once.

We had a behaviorlist try and train it bought it to puppy school had me and my dad in the house training it(ive trained around4 dogs and hes trained around 10) and the dog still bite and attack the cats even though we would let it see the cats it would growl at em. Why didn't YOU bring the dog to puppy school? Why didn't YOU train 'it' not to bite? Did YOU try to train it at all for the 4 months you had it? You should have brought it back to the original shelter. The people that brought the dog in said it was a Golden Retriever/ German Shepherd mix. But you say it's a Rhodesian and Rottweiler mix. How do YOU know what it is?

I'm 20 you people are to idealistic or just dont believe me idk but i swear to god and on any1s grave they gave us dog like 5 minutes after it just came in brand new i dont know what else to tell you.
Where do you live and what shelter was it that you went to? I don't know of any shelter, anywhere, that will take a dog in and then turn around and give it to someone else without 1.) vaccinating 2) spaying/neutering 3) temperament testing and 4) not doing an "in house" visit.

You have also changed the dogs age a few different times. 9 months, 1 year...which is it? Was it a puppy, or a young adult? Didn't you take it to the vet and find out?

Hello about month back I had to return a dog we were told was golden/german shepard but was really rhodesian ridge back/ rottweiler the dog didnt get along with the children and chased the cats so we gave it away to the pound while it was still a puppy and she was picked up and now seems to be doing fine in the new home.
It was like nine months old and people were telling us it should stop the niping and everything by now but t was just getting worse. We returned it to a different shelter because we got it from the old one a day after it came there and we dont want them to give that dog to a family again.
ten months so we think we werent told and we think we got it around 5 months

Actually the dog was a year old when we returned it They told us it was suppose to be nine months but they were wrong because when you calculate the time they went through heat
I'm 20 you people are to idealistic or just dont believe me idk but i swear to god and on any1s grave they gave us dog like 5 minutes after it just came in brand new i dont know what else to tell you.
This is probably why they don't believe you !
Did your "behaviorist" never suggest spaying the pup?
Again, it varies from state to state (I think) but generally pounds have to hold a dog for 3 days after its found. Unless of course another owner dumped it on them...

If your serious about getting another dog I'd strongly suggest going to an actual Shelter or SPCA that evaluate their dogs and make you fill out an extensive application and possibly do home visits ;)

Uh, Caren and Bailey, not what I was referring to. You only said that they make good family pets, and that I agree with. Sorry if I offended you.

I just wanted to comment on the pound/shelter thing.
I wish all shelters were good shelters. The fact is they are not.

I don't know if things have changed at our local "pound" (I don't think so), but as of five years ago.......
They did not require spay/neuter.
They do no background checks.
They kill dogs on Fridays.
If the dog is a stray..... They had to keep the dog for at least 5 days...then it could go up for adoption or be PTS. Because the owners did not claim the dog.
If the dog was an owner relinquish..and signed to give up the dog, then it was immediately available for adoption or possibly put down.
They do No medical care... no shots, no dewormings, nothing.
You pay your money and leave.
Since I haven't been there for a very long time... I am not sure of the cost to adopt a dog now.... but back then it was $10.00 :yikes:

This is a county dog pound. I hope things have changed since then, but I doubt it.

No they said the dog was nine months younger then vet said it was and I taught the dog not to bite but when I wastn around it wouldnt behave. The dog was sold to us for 60 dollars we had to vaccinate it and neuter it ourselves cause they just got the dog and handed it to us and there were no papers. We just though this is how american pounds were so we handed the dog into a dif pound because the one we got it from was not that nice and its the one the behaviorlist told us to give it to. That pound did evalulations and was like european pounds but the other pound just got the dogs put them in cages and handed them away. And we all met the dog at once because we were all in one room playing with the first dog they wanted and then they bought the new dog in cause they said it was younger. So we took the dog cause they told us it was a nice dog and this and that.

So if the dog was 1 yr old when you gave it up that means you thought it was 3 months old when you got it and it was actually 8 months old. Hmmm, I've always been under the impression that with bigger breed dogs it's easier to tell the age AND if it had been 3 months old you'd have been able to tell by the baby teeth. Most young dogs don't lose their teeth til they are 5 or so months old.

So you were all in one room meeting one dog and ended up getting another dog that they brought to you instead. How old was the first one and why didn't you get it? What was wrong with the first dog? If you liked it, why didn't you get it? Just curious.

HaR...I'm sorry you went to such a crappy shelter. Not all American shelters are like that. I'm going to ignore everything else in this thread and say the only thing was totally your fault was in accepting a dog when you had reservations about the shelter itself.

There are good ones out there. Two of my dogs are from the same shelter and one is from a breed-specific rescue. Many American shelters are just as good as the German and Italian ones you are thinking of. They screen quite thoroughly.

Where do you live? Perhaps we can suggest a better shelter to look around at, or give you some dogs off of Petfinder in your area to consider.

As far as good "family" dogs go...Labs, Golden Retrievers, Cavaliers, Beagles, Bichons, Australian Shepherds (though any herding breed does have a tendency to nip when excited, not aggressive, just a breed "thing"), don't discount other mutts because of this one bad experience.

The shelter I got my kitties from doesn't screen based on personality (at least, not for kittens), but does require that all outgoing animals be spayed/neutered. They will not physically give you the animal until it's been spayed/neutered. Basically, they trucked the kittens over to their vet after I'd paid for them, then I picked them up the next day after the snip-snip was done.

My girls have adopted 3 wonderful Labs between them and now I have my Ollie. Ollie is the first mixed breed my family has ever owned ...... I guess I could go back to my Great Grand parents .... 18?? ! . He's got a wonderful personality , great looks and I love him to pieces. !!! Until him ... I was a pure-bred snob !
