Well, golden retrievers and labrador retrievers are generally good with children and other pets. Labradors can have a frustrating adolescence stage, though . . . I know someone on a different pet board who was going through hell with his six month old lab who "forgot" all his training in his rebellious stage (including housetraining) and chewed everything in sight, including drywall. They are big chewers. They also shed like crazy. I believe labs don't pass out of the adolescent stage until about two or three years old. I suggest a rescue labrador or shelter lab who is at least a couple years old if you choose a lab. I know you had a bad experience with your first shelter dog, but with an adult dog, it's easier to evaluate him in the shelter.
They are two of the most popular breeds and there are tons of bad breeders exploiting them, so be extremely, extremely careful about choosing a breeder if you do go to a breeder for a puppy. A poorly bred lab or golden retriever can be hyperactive, snappy, or even aggressive.
