I recently purchased their Bertes Zymes supplement for one of my dogs. I just started using it today.

Do you mean the "Ultra Probiotic Powder"?

The ingredient quality is good, but it's a little weak for my taste as far as a probiotic supplement is concerned (only 100 Million CFU per gram, compared to over 5 billion per gram of the product I use) and I'm also not in favor of giving a normal, healthy dog a digestive enzyme supplement on a daily basis.

Since probiotics are something that works best if used daily long-term, and enzymes generally only on an as-needed basis short-term, I would use such a combo product only if a dog requires daily enzyme supplementation for medical reasons.

Mordy - can I just use a human probiotic (at this point I'm guessing just go into a health food store and ask an employee) then? Is there a recommended dosage if I go that route?

Yes you can. :) The probiotic I use is a human product - NOW brand 4x6 Acidophilus Powder:

Since a dog has a much shorter digestive tract than a human being, and things move through faster, use the full human dose, unless the dog is really small (under 15 lbs). For the little ones, half the amount is enough. :)

Thanks again!

The store doesn't carry that, or at least the employee said they didn't when I called (they do carry a few NOW products, but not that particular one), so figured I would just go and see what they do have.

Oh, any equal product is fine. You just don't want anything with a lot of fillers, or dyes etc.

Concentration of CFU is important though, the more viable organisms per weight unit, the more effective the product, and the less you need to give.

The most important thing is that CFU should be guaranteed throughout the shelf life of the product, not just "at time of manufacture".
