Just curious to know whether a Bernese Mountain Dog would suitable for a novice owner? I am currently still in education but finishing next year and was just curious once i've settled down and earn a good wage whether a Berner was a good dog to start with? I have heard that they are gentle for their size and quite good as a first dog but it's nice to know what others think, especially those that own.

Any Berner owners on here? just curious to know how it was with their first dog, just doing some research... always good to be prepared, even if its a little way off :D and hopefully i've posted this in the right place lol

I think they would suit a novice owner, providing that you educated yourself on the breed BEFORE hand and made the initiative to take them to puppy classes and obedience classes!! They are a big dog and with that can push people around easily. The best thing to see is a big dog with LOTS of manners! :)

if they are anything like my saint as long as you train it there shouldnt be an issue. My saint loves EVERYBODY  she tried to get in my baby god neices lap before we told her no.:D but she doesnt relize her size so she liked to try and jump in the beginning. She stuffs her head in everybodies lap. lol. but the great big teddy bear breeds (as i call them) are great dogs. Especially with familes. Ours is scared of big dogs becuase the owner before us didnt socialize her with any and my mom was being rushed by 2 BIG loose rottweilers and she just stood her ground, didnt growl or pull or anything just stood there until they left.

They're pretty forgiving dogs, but just remember that that cute little fluff ball is going to weigh around 100 pounds when full-grown, and what's cute as a puppy hurts as an adult. :D

Make sure to check for health clearances, especially concerning hips.

I have heard that they are good to start with but remember they need their excercise!!! Also if you could find a job for them to do it makes them all the happier! Good luck! As others have said, do your research and you should be fine.

Oh ya and be very picky about breeders. Lately their popularity has risen and with that comes bad breeders so pick and pry before making a final decision!
