Yesterday i let bella out for a while and she came back HOLDING A TOAD! i called the vet and he said to wash her mouth out and to BRING HER IN! Well, she dropped the toad and it hopped back outside. I washed out her mouth and rushed to the emergency vets (this was at 10 at night). Well she threw up in the car and was FOAMING at the mouth, luckily no seizures tho. Well we got there and they gave her a shot, and pills and NOW SHES ALL BETTER :) 3 days ago, she ate a bee, and her head was as big as a pumpkin, u think she would learn..NOOOOOOOOoOO! lol so thats the 2nd trip to the EV in a week! well $300 later, bella is all better and i think her days of messing with toads are over. and im done letting them play in the backyard alone.
Wow what a stressfull weak, not to mention i had to go to the cold emergency vets wearing nothing but my string bikini! lol

Oh Bella what are we going to do with you? Have you ever wondered how dogs would manage if they weren't so cute?

Yikes! Dogs eat the weirdest things. Luckily, mine usually don't pick up things on their walks. Although, Emma ate a dead bird once and got pretty sick. I'm glad Bella is okay though. That must of been pretty stressful.

what's the deal with toads? is it just certain kinds? i've never heard before that i should be extra cautious about making sure dogs don't eat them. we seem to have tons of them around this year and Delia chases after them all the time. i don't think we have any poisonous kinds in illinois. i should probably find out for sure though.

As far as I know all toads are poisonous. Why do you think some cheapo druggies lick their backs? Their warts carry the poison and it makes you breifly dilusional and such. Just by biting them a dog can get really sick. We have them around here too and kids like to catch them in the pond. I have to keep chasing them out of the dogs'' kennels now and then. Or if it''s being stubborn I just catch it and toss it on the other side of the fence.

Usually dogs will drop them when they taste them . I'm keeping my eye on Ollie.... he likes to go after flies and know one of these days he'll get a bee or wasp !! Glad I keep benadryl on hand !

Yes, toads emit some kind of toxin from their skin when they feel threatened (a.k.a. as eaten). It doesn't sound like Bella actually ATE the toad, though... thank goodness! Just enough to get the foaming and sickly toxicity going through her body... poor baby! I'm glad you took care of her through her ordeal$ :)

Florida has those huge Bufo toads and they can kill a dog just from the dog licking them. That's why the Vet had her rinse her dogs mouth out. I think they are far more toxic than other species of toads.

How scary, I'm glad Bella is ok! I never knew the toads where that poisonous, I'll have to keep a closer eye on Boomer when he goes out, he always goes nuts when he sees one.

Ren, I can't help taking the image of people wanting to lick toads back thanks to your post, ewwww! lol Humm, kind of see where the old “Frog turns into Prince Charming” theory for that hallucination. rofl

I was just saying in another thread that Spanky's been at the veterinary hospital today getting a bariium series. He ate something that caused problems. He was throwing up earlier in the blood and brought up blood! They found the inflamed area, but whatever caused it was no longer in his system.

Earlier in the year, he was sick for a couple of days after he helped the cat chew on a lizard the cat brought in.

I'm so glad she's okay! Andy is accident prone too if it makes you feel any better  . When I first got him he got into an ant pile and his face got so swollen that he looked like a pug instead of a sheltie :p
