Without going into too much detail...how do you single people do it with dogs? I'm a little afraid, as I have a larger dog and very soon I might be on my own. I'm just nervous about vet bills, food, well...mainly vet bills or emergencies.

You budget and save what you can. Sort of like being a single parent with no help from the other parent.

You know what it costs to feed her for a month, you know when to expect vaccinations, you budget that right into your bills and try to save a little in a separate spot for emergencies.

It's not easy, but you can do it if you are careful :)

Ditto ^^

its a little easier for me, since I dont have to worry about rent... BUT its actually not that hard to manage the general vet visits / food or whatever..

the emergencies are what sometimes worry me, but at my vet, I can make payment arrangements if something DID happen...

what ^^^ they said. I have Bev and Walker with no financial help. You look out for low cost shot and physical clinics.
things like this:

SHOT CLINIC: Rockwall Animal Services will host a low-cost shot clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. March 31 at 2001 S. Goliad St. All dogs must be on a leash; all cats must be in a carrier. One-year rabies shots will cost $8, three-year rabies shots $24, and all other basic shots $8. City of Rockwall animal registration will also be available; a one-year registration costs $5, and a three-year registration costs $15 per each spayed or neutered cat or dog. Call Rockwall Animal Services at 972-771-7750.

you alter their diet. Walmart Maxximum nutrition with a chicken thigh and a egg is halfway decent food. and a 20 lb bag is 13 bucks and lasted Walker (70 lb very active) a month and chicken comes in big packs at walmart. and the chix and egg is once a day. and keep a change jar for emergencies and a cc with a low interest rate. any other questions pm me.

I have to hope for a whole lot of good luck. I was lucky thanks to Zoom's help with Mary's last ordeal and was put on to a great and beyond reasonable vet. You might starat shopping around for a vet that will work with you if you don't have one already. i was single even when i was married finanically so nothing really changed when i divorced. Somehow we have gotten by and my dogs knock on wood are healthy and well fed.

I'm single, and I have two cats and a dog that eats an unbelievable amount of food. It may be a bit scary and frustrating in the beginning, but it always works out. My pantry stays fairly bare, but I get by. And there is always plenty of food for the girls. I keep money set aside that I won't let myself use except for them, and I keep a thousand set aside for emergencies. Believe me. I'm paying for school, as well, and I work at a fairly low-paying job. You'll be alright.

I'm single with 3 dogs...I was single with 5 dogs :yikes: After my divorce I was really nervous about how I was going to afford to take care of the furkids on a single paycheck. I put money aside each month when I could. There were things I did without, if I didn't absolutely need it I didn't buy it. My vet worked with me on paying bills if I had an emergency, I went to vaccine clinics when the dogs needed their shots.

When I couldn't get friends or family to watch the dogs if I wanted to go out of town they either came with me or I didn't go. I still sacrifice a lot of things to make sure that my dogs are taken care of.

Jeff doesn't pay a dime for the dogs, so I might as well be single.

If you have good credit, a credit card just for dog emergencies is a good idea. Keep it put away and safe, but know it's there for peace of mind.

As far as the rest, just do the best you can. I'm on a very minimal unemployment supplement right now as I was laid off in the spring, and every penny is a stretch, but I manage. They don't get alot of the extras that they're used to, but they eat, they get their medications, they see the vet when needed etc. My vet will work with me a little on payments. I just had to take Corvus to the vet this week and they are holding my check until my next unemployment payment comes. I'll have $20 to spare.

Like I said, definitely not easy, but you can do it.

On top of what everyone else has said, I wanted to add this:

Be sure and keep a good relationship with your vet. They will be way more likely to work with you on a payment plan if something extra should arise if they have known you and dealt with you for a while.

If you hop around, don't keep appointments, etc.......you may not build the trust between you and them, and someday you might REALLY need that trust to be in place.

I'd try to find a vet that allows you to pay off vet bills at a certain cost a month. My old vet would allow you to pay $20 a month to pay off vet bills if you didn't have enough to pay it off.

I'd write out a budget, things like this I'd write down and make an estimate:
How much do you spend on food each month? Treats & toys each month? Grooming? Etc etc.

Then I'd write out how much a vet visit usually costs. How much you usually spend a month on vet bills? How much does anesthesia cost? How much does an x-ray cost? Shots? Does he need any soon?

Anyway, after writing up an estimate and understanding how much an emergency could cost, you should consider if you will have the money to accomidate him. I hope it works out for you :)

You learn. what you spend always depends on ur budget, the more you make the more you spend or the less you make the less you spend. Most towns have free rabies clinics you just have to watch for them. Contact town shelters, they can usually tell you when they are. Also, town shelters sometimes have low-cost vets. And if you have an emergency most vets will work with you. The hardest part is finding a place to live when you have animals... :-(

I've got an SO but we split the house payment and bills 50/50 and altogether it probably works out to what a single person renting a place would pay... I just save up when I know shots are coming, and I usually do shot clinics. Food-wise, I don't feed the BEST best, because I think it's overkill, but when things are tight I resort to Diamond Naturals because it's not full of crap and it's like $22 for 40#. I also buy almost nothing for myself, and as other threads will indicate, I'll let my own health go to crap long before my pets'.

I've sold stuff through craigslist before just to buy stuff for my animals.... now I'm doing a bit better and it's not so desperate.

I work 2 jobs. Full time job and a part time job. I got my dog when I was on my own and he was 4 months now hes over 2 years and I live with my boyfriend but my dog is still my dog. My boyfriend doesnt do anything with my dog. He doesnt even take him out to pee cause Duke wont go for him no matter how bad he has to go. We as well split everything 50/50 and Im paying the same amount for rent and everything when I was on my own. I got a second job that I put in anywhere from 10-20 hours a week so I could do fun things with duke like agility and training. I had no money when I didnt have a dog and I have no money with a dog. It just goes to different things than it did when he wasnt with me.
