I was out getting groceries last night, and a man in the parking lot was walking around with this strange looking dog in his hands. It didn't look like any breed I know, and I'm usually very good at guessing dog breeds.
So I asked him what it was and he said it was a new breed from Germany called a beaver. Or at least I think he said beaver.. he had a very thick accent.
Is this an actual new breed? A designer breed of some sort?

never heard of it. but I did a google search and limited information came up on them.. They appear to be a cross of hunting dogs, bred to hunt as well.

As I started reading your story, I thought it was going to end up that the man was carrying an actual domestic beaver! I'm mildly disappointed to find out it's a dog breed;) .

And...wow. Careful how you google this.

Mainly white with some tan and black. It had a short snout, was about the size of a papillon with a thicker build. Medium fur.. kind of a shih-tzu face, pointy ears, uhh, that's about all I remember. Seriously like nothing I've ever seen.
It also somehow looked nothing like any of the breeds I mentioned in this description, if that makes any sense..

Probably a designer mutt that someone is selling as 'a new german breed'. Check out dogbreedinfo.com they have a huge (disturbing) list of designer mutts there with photos.

Pronunciation is right... spelling is wrong!

The dog was probably a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier ala Pom Pon. That's the German name -- but most people call them Biewers. Pronounced "Beaver" with an added german accent...

They are not a mixed breed -- but a product of breeding two traditional yorkies who carried a recessive piebald gene. They began developing them about 22/23 years ago, and worked to develop a standard. They must have white legs, white chest and belly. The tail is not docked, and the tip of the tail has to be white. The face is tri-colored (black (or blue), white and tan) and must have good symetry. The back can be any combination of two colors (black or blue and white) You can find info on them by googling "Biewer" or there are also several clubs. One you might want to check out is bytnc.org. As it is a newly imported breed here to the US, there is also a bunch of controversy attached to it. Many "greeders" jumped on the bandwagon and are breeding for the $$$$ and calling them "rare" yorkies. There are some breeders who are breeding with ethics, and you can find reasonably priced dogs that have been bred to the standard -- not just because someone has a male and female and has dollar signs in their eyes! The breed is not AKC or YTCA accepted, and it may never be. Time will tell.

Sorry... didn't mean to write a novel... just wanted to share the info and love that I have for this breed! By the way -- I am NOT a breeder -- I have a traditional yorkshire terrier, and a 9 month old Biewer girl...
