We are having a heck of a time housebreaking this guy. He is crate trained and upon coming out of the crate he is taken immediately outside. He will pretty much do his business on command now. We also take him outside after playing episodes when he is outside his crate.

However, he will still have accidents inside the house even sometimes after coming right back in from outside. I have never had this difficult a time with any dog I have house broke. My sister-in-law is telling my husband it is because beagles are strictly an outdoor dog. Any insight anyone can offer at this point would be appreciated.

Well I'll start off by saying beagles are not strictly an outdoor dog  So don't kick him out.

When he pees after you bring him in had he actually peed when he was out?
If when you take him out he does not pee make sure he goes straight back into the crate when you come in. Then take him out 15 minutes later and try again, repeating until he finally goes.

Remember when ever he is inside you need to be watching him. When he starts pacing and sniffing about like he is gonna go you need to rush him out. I'd rather you take him out for false alarms then not and then miss the time he does actually go potty. You can never take him out too many times IMO.

You seem like you are on the right track, it will take some time but by the sound of it you are well on your way. Just make sure to keep a closer eye on him so he does not have the chance to go potty inside. If you need to write down in a notebook every tie he goes potty and what it was (poop or pee) whether it was inside or outside, so you can see if there is a pattern. Make sure you feed him the same time everyday. How old is the pup?

Excellent advice. Id also add that if the peeing seems excessive to you it's NEVER a bad idea to have him checked for UTI's esp if he's also drinking a ton.

You also really need to be cleaning those spots because a Beagles nose, knows and he WILL be triggered to pee again if even a slight trace of pee scent remains there. Ditto with poop.

I have had entire litters of pups pee and poop in a "train" because the scent triggers them...even the one's that were asleep wake up and take part ;)

^^^^agreed! If he is peeing excessively have him checked for a UTI. Make sure you clean up all his messes with an enzymatic cleaner, it must be enzymatic or he can still smell it, even if you can't.

Taylor's 75% beagle and is totally an indoor dog! His last accident was 2 weeks ago. He's almost 6 months. They'll make mistakes as a pup, don't be too disappointed! Also, I did hear that hounds are harder to train because they are real stubborn!
