For getting a puppy used to baths is it ok to bathe them often if you don't use shampoo? What actually dries the skin out, is it simply washing out the coat oils or is it the shampoo itself? How do you recommend getting a puppy used to being bathed without drying out her skin?

My mom used to bathe our golden retriever every week, starting when she was 8 weeks old. It never caused any skin or coat problems. I think that as long as you use a conditioner, there will be no problems.

I know lots of people that give their pups weekly rinses to get them used to baths, as yes, it is the shampoo that ends up stripping their coat of valuable oils. That being said, Keira's had 3 baths (with shampoo & conditioner) in the 4 weeks we've had her and her coat/skin is beautiful. I think in general that as long as a quality product is used, it won't bother their skin. At least that's been my experience anyway with all of my dogs.

I ditto Toller. As long as you use a high quality shampoo/conditioner, I don't see a problem.

That's good, my friend's dog has to get used to grooming because of her mix so we want to get her started with that soon and often. Does anyone have any products they recommend that keep the skin healthy and keep them from drying out?

I don't have a problem bathing Milo often...of course it depends on the dog and coat. Using a conditioner will help, as will carefully rinsing out ALL the shampoo and using a formula that prevents dry skin.

I suppose you could just rinse a puppy to get it used to baths, make it fun with toys and treats, etc.

You can get them used to washing without shampoo . I do more mud rinsing than shampoos !!! Shampoo maybe ever 2 0r 3 months . I bathed Ollie about 3 weeks ago and he still smells fresh and clean .....but that's the name of his shampoo !! LOL!

I've found that giving frequent baths doesn't really hurt the skin and coat at all - it can even help hair grow, since dirty coat doesn't grow much.

My dogs get bathed every 1-2 weeks, leaning closer to every 2 weeks. I use a quality shampoo and conditioner and they're fed a good food - so they have no problems.

like your mom i do the same thing. if you want to make sure go to your vet ask them what would be the best shampoo and conditioner for your pet or you can monitor it by yourself.
