bath problem

Most of my dogs behave well in the tub. I could even leave one of them in their while I left the room without having them jump out, but I do have one which is HORRIBLE about baths. For this dog, I simply tie her into our tub. She has enough slack on the leash to move around, but she can't jump out.

I would make sure to give him plenty of treats while he is in the bath. While he may not enjoy the bath, he may think of it as less of a torture treatment. ;)

The last two nights have been bath nights for my 2. While Princess and Kokomo were out playing, I decided to give Gracie a bath and do some serious grooming to her. First step put towels in bathroom. 2nd step get Gracie. This means pick her up and carry this heavy thing to the bathroom. Somehow they just seem to know when they have to take a bath. 3rd step, get her in the bathroom and quickly shut door. 4th step catch her and again, pick up this heavy furball and place in tub. I'm lucky, once she's in the tub she's fine. She doesnt try to get out until I tell her to.

After her bath its time to let Princess and Kokomo in the house. I wont be able to give Princess a bath yet because I need to groom Gracie first. Princess takes one step in the house (still in doorway), looks at Gracie and turns and runs back outside! She avoided me for hours.

Last night it was Princess' turn. Again, get towels, put in bathroom. Find Princess now hiding under the dinningroom table. Sit down and pretend its a false alarm. Call her to me. Pet her and give attention to her then pick her up and carry her to bathroom. Avoid getting close to walls or she will use her dangling feet to try to stop herself. Get into bathroom, quickly shut door. Catch her in bathroom, pick her up and place in tub.

Best way to get your dog in the tub? Whatever works. :)

Depends on age and size. My Golden and granddogs labs , walk into the shower... I have the spray set up to hand held....I make sure I have everything on hand.. diluted shampoo , diluted rinse , scubber, towels etc. I usually strip down to panties and top and go in with them . If Grammy can do it - anyone can ! ( I have the water on right temp before I invite them it )

my Coco doesn't like baths, and he always stands on his hind paws, with his front paws trying to grab hold of me so he could hoist himself up. he doesn't really go crazy, but he does try to get out. so I have one person holding him so he doesn't get out, while I wash him and everything. reassure your dog that everything is fine, and speak soothingly, all the while caressing him so he feels calmer.

A "safe" alternative would be to find a local groomer or bathtub in a grooming shop that the facility "rents" out. This way you have a tie in already there to keep the dog from thrashing and possible injury.

If you do choose to bath at home, have a hand held shower noozle to make it easier and of course a bath mat to keep the dog from slipping.

What I've done to break in new dogs in the tub is when lathered a nice massage. I found this calms some of the most stressed out dogs.:) Try not to get stressed out yourself and fight with the dog. Try to ease the dog into enjoying the bath. Perhaps take a cup and pour over the dog to get most of the shampoo out as this may not freak the dog out as much as the shower noozle spray , then a quick rinse to get the rest out.

Our pup hates running water, it freaks him out. A hose, the tap, whatever... so this is what we do:
we fill the tub about 1/3 of the way, I get into short and a t-shirt and get in the tub. My husband gets the pup (about 60lbs now), puts him in with me. He gets a treat. We tell him to Sit, he gets a treat. We rinse, later, he gets a treat, we rinse... We use a bowl to scoop water and rinse over him from the water in the tub. If the water gets too soapy/dirty we drain a bit, I hold onto the pup and we put more water in the tub to fill it back up to rinse off better. He gets a treat.

When he is all clean, we drain, he shakes, he gets out, we try and towel him off as good as we can, he shakes, we towel some more, he shakes... then we let him out of the bathroom to completely dry off.

I can do it by myself, but it is easier and more efficient if there are 4 hands instead of 2.
