Laurelin,
thank you so much for your kind and very thorough response. We are reading all the comments from our post and are a bit disheartened. though we do realize that most of you here are experienced and very knowledgeable dog lovers and just trying to provide us all the info we need. we do appreciate everyone's comments and perhaps look for another dog that is pure breed instead of a mix breed. I have own 1 dog in my life and he was a black lab. he was awesome to say the least.
Do any of you have any suggestion for a small to medium size dog that would be ok to house in a condo? We live in downtown chicago and are looking for a dog that will be ok in this type of environment but also does not shed a lot. Before finding the Bashar we wanted a Pug only to be told that they shed a whole lot.. which disuaded us.
If anyone has any recommendation we would be happy to hear from you..
many thanks!
Bashar,
Thanks for posting again. Where do you live in Chicago? Luckily, it's one of the most dog friendly cities in the country! Have you visited PAWS downtown?
I have two dogs. One of them is from a breeder--he is a Schnauzer/Poodle mix (I wanted a non-shedding, smart dog). The other is a rescue from the Midwest Border Collie Rescue. Herschel, the schnauzer/poodle mix doesn't shed, he's brilliant, and his temperament is pretty good. Nala barely sheds, she's brilliant, and her temperament is great. Personally, for a pet dog, you won't necessarily find a difference between rescue and breeder...
You should make a list of the top 5 things you're looking for in a dog. Start with something like size and energy level, and then work your way down. After having one dog that sheds and one that doesn't, I can tell you that the lightly shedding coat is much easier to maintain. Herschel needs to be combed and blow dried after he gets a bath, we have to give him hair cuts, and comb him regularly to remove mats. (This holds true for all non-shedding dogs) Nala, on the other hand, never needs to be cut, her coat dries extremely quickly after she goes swimming or gets a bath, and we barely ever have to comb/brush her.
Since you live in a condo, you might want to consider the amount of time you will be able to spend with your dogs. I live in a condo and have two very high energy dogs, but that suits my lifestyle well. We are constantly out with them either playing, running, or finding some way to be active. Would you rather have a couch potato or an athlete?
A lot of people look for "intelligence" because they think smart dogs will be easier to train. That isn't always the case. Many "smart" dogs are harder to train because they find ways to work around training, they find better things to do, or they just decide not to care. On the other hand, high drive dogs
need training to occupy their mind or they will get destructive. You should try to find a suitable mix of intelligence and drive to meet your lifestyle. Unless you are going to be training daily, I would suggest a low to medium drive dog that is easy going.
