Laurelin,

thank you so much for your kind and very thorough response. We are reading all the comments from our post and are a bit disheartened. though we do realize that most of you here are experienced and very knowledgeable dog lovers and just trying to provide us all the info we need. we do appreciate everyone's comments and perhaps look for another dog that is pure breed instead of a mix breed. I have own 1 dog in my life and he was a black lab. he was awesome to say the least.

Do any of you have any suggestion for a small to medium size dog that would be ok to house in a condo? We live in downtown chicago and are looking for a dog that will be ok in this type of environment but also does not shed a lot. Before finding the Bashar we wanted a Pug only to be told that they shed a whole lot.. which disuaded us.

If anyone has any recommendation we would be happy to hear from you..

many thanks!
Bashar,

Thanks for posting again. Where do you live in Chicago? Luckily, it's one of the most dog friendly cities in the country! Have you visited PAWS downtown?

I have two dogs. One of them is from a breeder--he is a Schnauzer/Poodle mix (I wanted a non-shedding, smart dog). The other is a rescue from the Midwest Border Collie Rescue. Herschel, the schnauzer/poodle mix doesn't shed, he's brilliant, and his temperament is pretty good. Nala barely sheds, she's brilliant, and her temperament is great. Personally, for a pet dog, you won't necessarily find a difference between rescue and breeder...

You should make a list of the top 5 things you're looking for in a dog. Start with something like size and energy level, and then work your way down. After having one dog that sheds and one that doesn't, I can tell you that the lightly shedding coat is much easier to maintain. Herschel needs to be combed and blow dried after he gets a bath, we have to give him hair cuts, and comb him regularly to remove mats. (This holds true for all non-shedding dogs) Nala, on the other hand, never needs to be cut, her coat dries extremely quickly after she goes swimming or gets a bath, and we barely ever have to comb/brush her.

Since you live in a condo, you might want to consider the amount of time you will be able to spend with your dogs. I live in a condo and have two very high energy dogs, but that suits my lifestyle well. We are constantly out with them either playing, running, or finding some way to be active. Would you rather have a couch potato or an athlete?

A lot of people look for "intelligence" because they think smart dogs will be easier to train. That isn't always the case. Many "smart" dogs are harder to train because they find ways to work around training, they find better things to do, or they just decide not to care. On the other hand, high drive dogs need training to occupy their mind or they will get destructive. You should try to find a suitable mix of intelligence and drive to meet your lifestyle. Unless you are going to be training daily, I would suggest a low to medium drive dog that is easy going.

Here are a few dogs in Chicago that might be a good match for you:

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need any help in the Chicago area. I know several people that might be of assistance to you and I'm not so far away. Also, there are a lot of great dog friendly activities around the city so please let me know if you're looking for a store, boarding, or a day out.

I agree on schnauzers with the shedding. I had them in my youth and they didn't shed hardly at all. But they WERE barky.

wow thank all for your responses and recommendations!!! We are going through pet finder right now..

Zoom - Thank you for the site we greatly appreciate that... we took the test and it looks like it recommended the following: (list of dogs we like) Labs, Bichon Frisse, Welsh Corgis, Bassett Griffon, and Border Terriers.. This is a great site and thank you for pointing it out..

Herschel - We just bought a condo in the South Loop Area on Michigan Ave. Many of our neighbors have dogs but none that we have liked (except fpr a couple Pugs and Labs). Yeah it is a great dog-friendly city and we are hoping to find a match that would suit us. Also, thank you for your offer of assistance we may take you up on it as soon as we find our dog.. we are very excited to add a puppy to our home.. ;-)

To everyone else...again thank you so much for the links and recommendations.. we even liked the stuff dog recommendation.. that's a good one.. LOL!!

Welcome to the forums, Bashar! :D

First, I just want to say- please stick around and weed past those with instant insults and disrespect and listen to those who have offered some great advice and education regarding mixed breeds.

Second, it seems Herschel is at least familiar with your area and will be a great asset to helping you find a suitable companion for you and your family. I'd just like to add, or rather emphasize the importance of looking at shelter dogs or shelter puppies. They need homes, too. :)

Third, when you get said puppy/dog pictures are mandatory. :D

Happy Hunting!

Bichons are really good if you don't like shedding but don't mind grooming. My friend has one who is a doll.

Like BP said, welcome to the forum and happy puppy hunting!

I'm glad I seen you stuck this out. It may of sounded harsh, but they were (for the most part).

It looks like a cute mix you picked out. but with the designer breed craze, no good breeders breed these. When looking for abreeder you would more then likley want to stay away from this "breed" as most are out just to make a buck, and dont care for the health and temperments of the puppies, or even know how to actually breed properly (if they did they wouldnt be mixing these 2 breeds to begin with)

I hope you find a dog/puppy. It sounds like you have alot of time for a puppy. if you like labs, it sounds like you know their temperment, becuase you have owned one, and also have enough tme to devote to it. Shedding can be taken care of by good foods and brushings, will pretty much elimanate excessive shedding.

I hope you continue to stick around and learn some more. Every one here is very knowledgeable about dogs. and a good bunch are very knowledgable about breeding

What about French Bulldogs or Boston Terriers? I think you mentioned you liked the size of a Frenchie... I think both are only moderate shedding dogs, but I don't know how much shedding is really too much for you!

Awww!!! No fair posting boston puppy pics!!!!! ****mutters to self repeatedly "I do not need a puppy....I do not need a puppy!"

I have a boston terrier in an apartment and its worked out very well. He's not a barker (well he's not until my new min pin addition starts up), but I worked with him right away to curb the behavior. He sheds, but no more than my cats. But he's pretty active and constantly busy doing something if he's not sleeping. He does have a problem in the heat/humidity, so I don't usually walk him during the hottest part of the day. Otherwise he's a very healthy, active little clown. I absolutely LOVE his goofy, happy go lucky personality. Joey weighs almost 15 pounds, but bostons can weigh anywhere from 10 pounds to even 35 pounds (though the standard is between 15-25 pounds).

WOW Bashar! I am suprised you stuck around after the things that were said to you about the mixed breed you were interested in! I am very impressed that you took the critisism and thought about it and now consider other options. Chaz is always about teaching and being a responsible pet owner! I hope you find the right dog for you and rescue one to boot :) Welcome to the forum!

Hey Bashar, I'm glad you stuck around. :) Mixed breeds can make great pets, but reputable breeders don't purposely breed them because so many are already dying in shelters. So definitely look into adopting from a shelter--you could save a life!

If you decide on a purebred dog, you can adopt from a shelter or rescue or try to find a reputable breeder, but I would caution you that it can be difficult to find a good breeder versus an unknowledgable or just plain greedy breeder.

Regarding a condo dog, are you looking for small dogs because your heart's set on a small dog, or is it because you think they'd do best in condos? Because greyhounds make great apartment dogs--they are large but actually very lazy. And you can adopt them at 2 years old from rescue groups.

you would not believe the mixed dogs that are out there. I own a silkshire dog, and he's beautiful, but he came froma puppy mill breeder who bred all kinds of strange mixes-
