I was just wondering what everyone's techniques for basic training are...and I also need a little help training Charlie. :D I was wondering how you did the following things:
-Heal
-Beg
-Roll Over
-Sing
And whatever else...

Thanks! :)

I don't remember how May and Colby learned heel because my sister taught them that when I was really little. But for Tippy, I hold her by my side and say, "HEEL!" if she stays in heel for five seconds, she gets "gooood girl!" and a treat. Then I make the time she has to wait longer and longer. If she goes out of place I say "Hey!" and put her back in place.

Colby learned beg by herself, lol, but you could try holding a treat in the air.

To teach rollover I took a treat and had them lay down and then lurred them. I taught May and Tippy this way, Colby already knows it well.

Sing (I call it "speak"), just when the dog barks say, "sing!" and then after a few seconds reward him. It was never a problem with Colby just she barky anyways lol

Well that's how I trained Charlie to sit, so I don't think that would really work... :D

Oh! I just remembered another way to teach beg. Have him sit against a wall, take a treat and dangle it in the air so that he leans back on his hind legs. The wall helps so he won't fall over lol.

How did you train heel? And up? And is Paw the thing where the dog puts its paw on your hand when you put your hand out?

Heel?

When on leash, when he was next to me, i would say Heel.
Then say "free" and let him wander off.

Then sometimes i used cheese to make him follow at my side. Overall he doesnt need the command anymore, when i roll up a leash in 2x he just comes to my side or when situation arises where he needs to be near me, he'll drift to one of my legs.

Up == Stands up from down position into Stand position.
Paw == He hits with his paw repeatedly while sitting or standing.

thats the basic set of commands we try to do daily.

i taught my dog sit, (lay)down, up, off, kiss, stay, go get your...(bone, bear, leash, toy), stop, go get my purse! still working on heel but knows "go on" for releasing from a heel. my dog is 6 months old and practice will make better but he definitely knows what they all mean whether or not he decides to do them right away. i have had ALOT of experience with animals...BUT, i am only 19. and i believe spending the time everyday 10 minutes at a time so the dog WANTS to learn the trick is all it takes.

Roll over -- Sawyer rolls over a lot on his own and I started praising him that way, then started rolling him over myself while saying the command. Then I would put him in a down and move the treat slightly behind and to the right (or left) of his head. He had to move his head to see it, and eventually his body followed.

Beg--hold the treat up just high enough so that he has to stand for it but not jump. This one just takes repition and rewarding at the right moment.

Thanks for all of this guys! It's really interesting for me, and it helps me alot! But the problem with beg is, Zoom, is that if I hold it really high, he thinks he'll get it if he sits. I'll sit there for like, 3 minutes and he won't budge, lol.

Oh but I have a problem....when I train Charlie sit and down, he reacts to hand motions. I tried doing it with just my voice, and he didn't do it. Does this just take time?

You need to understand how a dog learns before you may teach it.

Dogs learn using the "ARC" System

A Association
R Repetition
C Consistency

Dogs Associate you giving him a treat with sitting down. Every time you repeat this the same thing happnds and if your consistent with your training they learn much faster!

ChocLabLover,

I mean no offence, and I probably haven't read all of your posts, but I feel like I'm getting a "commercial" for a product everytime I read one.

I personally enjoyed Cesar Millan's "People Training For Dogs", but I do not promote it in my posts out of respect for the others here who have different views on training methods.

Is this your own product? If it is, I would also enjoy hearing about your personal philosophy and experiences in your own words, as it pertains to each owner and situation.

Again, no offence or put-down of this material or you, is intended. :)

thanks! Charlie just got better at listening to my commands, not looking at them. Should I just keep doing sit and down until he gets very good, and then start a new trick? Or do you think I should start now?
